Hey fellow Forumites,

I would like a bit of extra into on Telkom's 10mb service. Any guys using the 10mb service, what is the general experience, what are the actual speeds and has anyone had any router issues or additional configuration required on their routers?

As long as you have a ADSL2+ modem then you are good to go! I am syncing at 8056 and wow. I get speeds of 850kBps and its sooo awesome! gaming is A++

I'm getting about 5 - 6 meg speeds (Claremont Cape Town, depending on the ISP I connect with) and it's way faster than my old 384k :)

:throws frot bananas at Whippy and Zolly out of Jealousy!!! im still rolling through the hood with 3.45meg line!!!

In order to facilitate a stable 10 Mbps connection, you require a modem with a trend chipset - (http://www.africanaxess.co.za/) - Web Africa delivers best throughput to all destinations (local / intl.) 8.5 Mbps / 0.75 Mbps / 7ms (local) 180 (europe) modem data rates: 10015 / 875 kbps

I sync at 10mbps at the moment (claremont / clarinch) but am moving in a month's time. Holding thumbs for decents speeds in oranjezicht.

It depends large on your distance from the exchange and line attenuation (and SNR ratio). If you are more then 1.5km from the exchange, Telkom will try 8Mbps, then 7Mbps, etc, until your line is stable.

The supposed benefits are much over-hyped IMHO. For most things (particularly international) its closer to 50KB/sec.

Only once, for about 60 sec, was I able to get a sustained download speed of 700KB/sec. That's less time than it took me to type this sentence...

Edit: After I posted, I downloaded a BBC podcast, which I did not know was cached locally (SAIX). 12.2MB in 19 sec @ 661KB/sec.

If it hadn't been cached this would probably have taken 2-3 mins. Line speed is seldom the limiting factor, unless you know for certain the file is available locally (from a fast server).
