Telkom's big shift in strategy

I was right not to have faith in them. It's sad. This company, with a good management team, could have so much potential. It's a pity they don't see it that way. International operator have proven that IPTV is the way to go. Why would they go against that? They should invest in innovative media technologies, not back out of it! Why did they get September? He has been with them forever. He's part of the old Telkom way of thinking. They should have given the job to someone with a vision. Someone interested in creating new products that are built around a media experience.

They'll learn!

Well... Telkom has been the genius company supporting a copper-wire infrastructure for the last... oh... decade or two while the rest of the world moved forward. In my experience, they're not fond of "change."

Someone finally realised that IPTV would mean huge bandwidth allowances and faster speeds at MUCH cheaper prices for the consumer......we cant have that now can we?

Telkom should concentrate on being what it should always have been, a large carrier. Its core business is traffic and this is what it must concentrate on.

It mus be a pure wholesaler with its bandwidth being sold to retailers.

It should not be involved in selling direct to the public. It should not be selling pc's, modems etc or any end user equipment. Not even switchboards!

Telkom can't supply the required bandwidth at the required speed so Telkom Media had to get the boot.

This is another nail in Telkom's coffin. Their future plans are like trying to see 10m ahead in thick fog.

All together now:
DIE TELKOM DIE :D :D :D

I thought the title said Telkom's big sh*t in Strategy... sounded more appropriate.. excuse my French.

Absolutely!

i'm enjoying Telkom management squirm and look stupid on a global stage.

Equipment problems - have a good idea what it is to, which also explains why they are going to play around with low end stuff - the optical IPs will eat them up in about four years

Snap!

@ldmelsa
I cant agree more with all you say. It also seems what with their worrying about debt and financial black holes that their direction change (which Im not so sure about as it implies they did have a direction to change rather than random meanderings)cost them 10% of their share price which I think I read translated to close on a loss 75 Billion in one day.

@bekdik
Also agreed and as I said a while back.

The article also mentions a recent nose dive in service delivery - I didn't realise there was room for it to get any worse than it already was.

I do callout pc support and when its a dsl fault im terrified to even try and dial infinity(0800375375). Its just a mind loosing experience!

Every CEO has a new strategy, that means Telkom is going to have quite a few new strategies over the next few years.

IMHO a company has to be good with its core business before diversifying. It is all very well and good to look at the facts and figures on paper and decide 3G or media is a growth point. But the problem is that if you are terrible at your core business nobody is going to trust you in your non-core business.

Telkom management do not really understand how to run a successful company. They have enjoyed success because of their monopoly status but that's all. They need to fix their core business, their products and service levels are terrible. If they fix that, they will improve revenue in the long term and shut out competitors that are trying to enter their their own turf. Only once they are good at what they do should they diversify.

Telkom does not think long term and neither do most of its shareholders. Telkom is thinking short term to try and keep the market happy but in the process bleeding itself dry. The end result will not be pretty, but it may be welcome.

Sure hit the nail on the head there, Boss! :D

Telkom could never compete in the PAY TV arena. Unlike areas where you have a monopoly, you can't tell a customer whose pay TV service is not working, to be patient for 3 -4 weeks while you get around to fixing the service.

I think they finally realized that they could never provide anywhere near the level of service or support required (never mind the bandwidth)
