Telkom's plans for improved ADSL

Why are so many new housing developments completed without Telco cable infrastructure? We've been looking at some flats/townhouses to buy and out of 30:
1 had a copper phone line in the house
1 had Wifi in the complex
1 had SmartVillage infrastructure

Blame the developers not telkom.

It looks Telkom has not learnt anything. Less talk and more action would be nice for a change.

I would gladly pay more for a 40/20 Mbps VDSL line. But, its not available in our area. What about 10Mbps? Sorry its not available in our area. If they could offer the faster VDSL / ADSL lines I could get a few of my friends and family to cancel DSTV and get ADSL.

Come next month I will be joining Paul Hjul as a major irritant to ICASA and the Telcos... the last LLU workshop was promising but now is the time to get moving with the follow up on it.

interesting :)

unfortunately according to my information
- the task team which was set up to run a pilot in an underutilised rural telkom exchange never got off the ground
- ICASA have now reversed their position and want to do a regulatory impact assessment around LLU
- they will only take decisions on implementation once this has been completed

so not round the corner
(except in the imminent sense)

I knew that the task team would never get off the ground. Words/ideas are much easier than action!

Any time-frame on the impact assessment? Or link to source so that I can start reading, please?

PS. and a new minister (or two) to meddle in ICASA's affairs...

Armstrong indicated:
Much of the value of fixed-line as a premium product comes from the superior broadband services that can be delivered over wires, compared to those provided wirelessly
From a throughput perspective, ADSL is not much of a premium product.
LTE & 3G generally have higher throughput.

1Mbps,2Mbps don't have the throughput to be classified as broadband.
Even 4Mbps throughput is too little for home use.
FCC(USA) may re-define “broadband” as 10Mbps to reflect actual Internet usage

Armstrong indicated:
From a throughput perspective, ADSL is a premium product as it's stable.
LTE & 3G generally have higher throughput for a few seconds, then data stops, then starts again and is completely unstable.

Fixed that for you.

Speed is useless if it's not stable.

Fixed line will always be more stable than wireless.

This is something that I've been waiting to ask the CEO about (next time he is on the Money Show on 702).

They spend millions in advertising but when you move into a complex and ask for a line you get told "no, there's no infrastructure."

Out of all the complexes I looked at, not one had land lines.

See my earlier post. The telcos are not to blame - divert your query to the developers.

I pay three distinct amounts:
  • POTS Rental
  • ADSL Enablement
  • DATA/ISP
So what does the ADSL Enablement pay for?
ADSL Enablement does not pay for IPC or DATA.

That's for the backhaul to your dslam and for upgrades to make sure you don't get a congested "exchange".

Any cable theft in the area?
Not that I know off. I'm in a weird predicament. I've placed an order for a line in Feb. Was told no ports available. About 2 weeks ago my immediate neighbor applied for a line and got it install within a week. So we both go into a Telkom store and explain to the lady behind the counter that this is our situation, My order is pending on the system for months yet my neighbor has a line installed within less than a week.

So I ask what can be done, do I cancel my order and place a new one because clearly there are ports as my neighbor had his line installed. She said I must wait. I've tried contacting TelkomZA but have not had a response this week yet.

So ICASA have bowed to Naspers again (who are demanding a heavy regulatory approach and impact assesement so that we can look like New Zealand)? And to cover tracks given Telkom stupidity another run at the mill

Of course this does mean that the next time Telkom refuse access to a facility the CCC cannot hold off on the strict penalties because the defence of waiting for LLU on facilities leasing is out the window.

Why the **** Telkom do not realize that they should be driving LLU as a means of completing their own internal restructuring and getting there infrastructure to actually be used never fails to annoy me.

McD who gets to wear the cape and whose the side kick?

Because with ADSL you can choose your ISP. The price for data in that parkurst development is absurd.
it isn't Telkom's fault that only one iECNS licence holder provides commodity internet service provisions

That's the fault of the developers. They know that they must get the Telcos involved during the civil work stage of construction. In this way all the necessary pipes and ducts are laid upfront. Once the complex is complete, the Body Corporate will normally not allow a Telco to dig up its roads, green areas, etc. It's also cheaper to lay the pipes/ducts in the civil work phase.

I thought all the developments nowdays did the ducts during the civil work phase? I know of people in 3 developments who got Telkom lines (despite one having the feeble SmartVillage fiber) and in each case Telkom just had to push copper, the ducts were already there.

The Parkhurst fiber rollout will be open access. Multiple ISP's will compete for customers charging whatever they want.

Exactly what i had in mind, we pay voice line rental and adsl line rental :wtf: . no matter what way they might try to put it, it's too much to ask for

This article's headline is misleading,WHERE ARE THE...

Big plans for Telkom ADSL

Besides...

For this reason they will be simplifying their products and reducing their consumer broadband offering to 7 or 8 products.

More like summing up past challenges and being vague on what these Big Plans for Telkom ADSL are and time frames.
