Temu is exploding in South Africa

Also check on the orders themselves, you can claim more money back if the value of the items you order has dropped since ordering.

I ended up paying next to nothing for a whole bunch of crap (party decorations) my wife ordered for kids parties this year.
 
Just bought for the third time yesterday. Everything cost me R309 whereas if I bought the products in SA, I would have spent R740, I checked from most retailers and that was the cheapest price, the worst was R863.

South African retailers will need to be price competitive if they want to survive this behemoth. But, knowing them, they will moan and bitch to the government to help save them from this "unlawful" newcomer.

Ofcourse, but here is the thing.

You get ripped off by it being locally manufactured, so TEMU floods in killing the local market and all the jobs. Your taxes would need to be raised to cover so much more new people added to SASSA and eventually TEMU can flood it with cheap junk products, and you wont have an option, because quite honestly you wont have other options than to buy from them.

Many of our local industries has shut down, thus taxes has dwindled. Prima Toys now import all from abroad, they used to have a huge manufacturing plant locally. They closed shop and over 1000 staff lost their jobs, because it was simplier easier to bring it from abroad.

But dont worry you will be replaced too, by someone from India who will do your job better and cheaper.

Capitalism yay.
 
You see to destroy a market with jobs etc is easy.

Flood in good products cheaply. Eventually the local market who cant compete capitulate and shuts down. Then bring in cheap stuff and hike the prices. People have no option to buy it then.

Look at Nike. Now all made in China. Quality is cheap and they dont last long but you will pay about R2k a pair of Tekkies.

Long ago it used to be made in South Korea, I paid R150, and my Nikes lasted 12 years.

I laughed the other day when I walked in the Shop and saw the exact same pair I paid R150 for now prices at R2100 for the pair. But alas... Made in China.

So locals supporting these foreign companies will simply destroy their own market, and then their taxes has to be raised to cover more for SASSA for the ones thats now jobless. And over time you will be replaced too.

Its nothing personal, its just business. But honestly it will become personal.

What work do you do? Will you go complaining if they replace you with someone better and more qualified from India? You should become more competitive.

Helping destroy our local industry means they will ship you cheaper junk at a higher cost.

Our clothing Industry of about 400 000 people has been completely decimated.

These things haven’t been R150 in the last 25 years so stop talking kak.

It’s also not like they were ever made in SA so they were always expensive.

Oh no, South African retailers have been shafting us for far too long. There is nothing wrong with making a profit but if you are going to multiply something 4 or 5 times the price you bought it for, then I don't feel sorry for you.

This is a free market. As for me being replaced with someone better, why should I have a problem? Either I upscale my skill set or I accept that someone better is taking over. This is the way of the world... or should I say, this how life works.

Like I've always said it, the only people I feel sorry for are the employees. For the retailers, let them compete properly and stop robbing us blind.

Oh, and the products I bought from Temu thus far, they are of excellent quality, there is no single complaint from me. I have not been sold junk.

Our clothing industry died because of a few factors:
1. local retailer chasing higher profits for products imported from China.
2. high cost of doing business in South Africa
3. high import costs and terrible logistics

Now you can bypass the local retailers that have been chasing profits and ignoring local suppliers, by buying the same thing directly from Chinese markets.
 
Customs on my R115 order was R50 - quite high relative to the order itself (44%) . I bought 3 of the below thermometers, so R55 each

Since Wish I never trusted these Chinese imports - the slave labour they use isn't good with invisible stitching.
 
I was listening to a podcast on Temu and its essentially aggregating orders for product so that factories can produce them in larger amounts, cutting the cost. On the flip side it is also identifying what products the world needs and what demand trends are. From what I can see its a massive online chinese factory. This should be a big threat to the "Takealot marketplace" because all that is essentially is people importing cheap chinese **** off of Alibaba and marking it up by several hundred percent to then sell to suckas on Takealot. That business is threating to dry up with Temu arriving, so it will be interesting to see how this pans out. I notice that there are no premium brands on temu - its all rather functional as opposed to trying to hit a quality metric.
