Terry Pratchett has died

R.I.P.

I have never read any of his books but I know a lot of people testifying to his greatness. I even purchased a couple of books for an ex gf and she loved him.

Time to start reading.

This is very sad to hear. I tend to read Good Omens every year or two, been through it at least a dozen times. Its definitely one of my best reads. And thanks to him I also got into Neil Gaimans work. Sad to hear he's gone, but he will continue to entertain humanity for generations.

RIP

Trolls in Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, unlike the monstrous trolls of folklore and J. R. R. Tolkien, have been subverted into a moderately civilised race. Trolls on the Discworld are, essentially, living, mobile rocks. Trolls have grown to overcome those vicious stereotypes of yore and have lived very prosperous lives in heavily populated cities with (relatively) little killing, and they have held jobs as diverse as police officer and concert promoter.

You mean patches??!

RIP Pterry.

Rest in peace, Sire.

My father suffered the scourge of dementia and Alzheimer's, so I have some understanding of the "grimness" of this. There is no dignity in this whatsoever. Just seems so sad that a brilliant mind should suffer so ill an end.

:(

RIP

Terry Pratchett provided me with many, many hours of intelligent, incisive and above all, enormously funny reading.

He was a brilliant author who I only discovered, much to my delight, in my early 30's.

Go well good sir, go well.

There is hope for me then. Although I am slightly beyond this age :p

I love his books on audio!
Truckers
Was my first. :o

Audio book? Now that sounds like my kind of reading :)

Same here. Good omens every few months :)

After reading this thread I decided I will read a book or two from Terry Pratchett. Interesting quotes.

RIP Sir Terry, and thank you for all the laughs. Your novels helped me develop the warped sense of humour that I wouldn't trade for anything. Rest well, great man.

The Luggage was always my favourite character. Rest in peace Sir Terry.

BRITISH FANTASY NOVELIST TERRY PRATCHETT, OF DISCWORLD FAME, DIES
BY BILL SMITH, DPA

British fiction writer Terry Pratchett has died at the age of 66, his publisher said Thursday.

"The world has lost one of its brightest, sharpest minds. Rest in peace, Sir Terry Pratchett," said Larry Finlay, managing director of Transworld Books.

"Terry took death's arm and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night," said Pratchett's daughter, Rhianna.

The prolific author of some 70 fantasy novels was diagnosed with a rare form of early-onset Alzheimer's disease in 2007.

He is best known for his Discworld series and became Britain's best-selling writer in the 1990s.

"Terry faced his Alzheimer's disease - an 'embuggerance,' as he called it - publicly and bravely," Finlay said.

"Over the last few years, it was his writing that sustained him," he said. "His legacy will endure for decades to come."

Pratchett has sold tens of millions of books worldwide in dozens of languages.

He published his first novel, The Carpet People, in 1971, although he did not take up writing books full time until 1987.

Pratchett's career as a novelist took off with the publication of the first Discworld book, The Colour of Magic, in 1983.

The Discworld novels are set in a parallel universe supported on the back of four elephants that stand on the shell of a giant turtle - a universe that bears more than a passing resemblance to our own.

After his diagnosis with Alzheimer's disease, Pratchett also campaigned to raise awareness of the condition and improve research funding to combat it, while making considerable donations.
