A WBS reseller came to my house the other day and measured my signal strength. Basically he used his own laptop etc and set it up at my PC. He measured 30%. Is this good enough? Would a BIG patch antenna on my aerial mast improve this? What is the max cable distance allowed between the patch ant and the PC?

I think 60% and above would be fair (this is before connection). I have connected at that speed and have still got download speeds of up to 40-50kb/s.

you can get 80% and still get at 90/100 KB/s

when my modem first got here it was 30% and sometimes bobbed a little but I found my sweet spot and now it 100%, the thing to watch out for is the frame error rate, even with 100% if you have a high error rate the speeds will be crap.

agreed with slimothy, unless the dude tested it everywhere, chances are you'd be able to get 100%. Get iburst, and if it doesn't work well, return it within 7 days

Thanks for the response

Thanks for the response.

I fall in one of the light green coverage areas. So I think I'll give it a miss for now. WBS is planning a new tower at Menlo Park, but no one can/will tell me if I will fall in that tower's reception area. I sent two e-mails to WBS to ask specifically that, but they ignored me so far. It seems par for the course.

Nobody said anything about the external antenna thing, though. Is it possible? Can/will it boost the signal? etc.

My other alternatives going the broadband route is ADSL and 3G. Telkom I don't like at all and 3G is damn expensive. Sigh. Guess I'll have to be patient and wait a few months more.

Whilst we're on the subject of kick the UTD for 7 days then return it, what is the latest WBS policy with the activation fee - do you get that refunded or is it down the tubes?
