Testing Takealot's discount percentages

Geez, I've been ordering stuff from Amazon and they have the same problems. I don't think Takealot is interested in just selling their own stuff.

This Takealot behaviour isn't new: end of 2019 with loads of load-shedding around and everybody was looking for mini-UPSes.

The company "Vizia" sells this on takealot: VIZIA WiFi UPS 38,000mWh 5/12/12V Mini DC Backup Battery Power | Buy Online in South Africa | takealot.com (as of today, R1 499, "normal price" = R1 900). They have been selling it for years, including in 2019.

On 8 Dec 2019 it was R699 ("was R1000")
On 9 Dec 00:20 it was R799 (I didn't grab a screenshot of the "was" price).
On 9 Dec, somewhere in the morning it was R899 ("was R1300").
On 9 Dec, 11:52 it was R1 199 ("was R1500")
On 9 Dec, 21:30 it was R1 499 ("was R1500")
On 9 Dec, 23:18 it was R1 699 (at this point they dropped the "was" price)
On 10 Dec it disappeared from Takealot (obviously not permanently).

So that was an increase of R1000 (or 143% increase) in 24 hours!! Yes it might have been Vizia who upped the price to take advantage of loadshedding fears (many suspected an algorithm from Takealot's side), but it was still pretty shameless, especially moving the "was" price around as well.

Made me decide two things:
- Never buy something from Vizia
- Never bother reading the "was" price.

DealsDealsDeals used to track Takealot, until latter blocked their crawler...
 
When it was Take2 back then it was still decent to get good deals, now its Takeakak.

Pretty standard behaviour from Takealot. I very often see items that go on sale and have their ‘was’ prices increase significantly.

Yeah they wont give them a API and any site that does something like 1000 hits over a hour or something gets blacklisted with takealot

camelcamelcamel great site for amazon spoke to them and they said API is the main method

It's more complicated than just recalling the price from audit logs.

They would need to link matching PLIDS as marketplace sellers create new PLIDS to make their products stand out and be the only seller instead of linking to an existing PLID with existing TSINS and sellers.

Then you have supplier changes which impacts costing.

Managing catalogue in e-commerce is no easy task, even for Takealot.
 
Their delivery is very good and their returns are excellent for that alone I will pay a little more.

So you’re saying its okay for them to provide false information as fact? Just because I’m capable of doing my own homework and identifying their deceit does not mean they should be allowed to continue to do so.

By that argument I could say shoplifting is okay since it’s up to the retailer to catch me. If they don’t put sufficient protections in place they deserve it and what I’m doing can’t be seem as wrong.

I hope you are also going to write a strongly worded letter to whichever battery manufacturers packaging states "lasts 3 times longer".
 
I wonder if there are really people who purchase something based on discount % Takealot states?

Personally I pay 0% attention to the supposed discount. Either I know what the price generally is, because I am interested in the item already/before, or I go and compare the prices using Google shopping and even other Takealot sellers. I then make the purchase once I have accepted the price vs value, or else I do not make the purchase.

Sometimes I might even get the slightly more expensive version, just because 1 seller has it in stock, and the other doesn't.

No, and I will call him out when he lies to me.

I agree that everyone needs to do their own due diligence when making purchasing decisions. But I don’t get how you can defend them when they’re knowingly and continuously lying.

It’s not like it’s a once off mistake. The crux of the matter is that they’re lying, and that’s wrong.
