Thailand/Bangkok QA thread

I believe the beers are rather potent? My youngest brother got absolutely hammered in Pattaya. Then again, they started drinking when they were waiting to board at Cape Town International.
Chang is 6.4%, so be careful. :D

If you are a brandy drinker, as you say, then take enough with you, the brandy you get there tastes like perfume or is expensive cognac.

Get some vodka, pour it in a water bottle and order fruit shakes. Mix your "water" with their fruit shake and you are good to go.

4 nights is too long for Phuket Town, rather add that to Patong.

Or another beach for two nights, Nai Yang right next to the airport is nice, Rawai has some nice sunsets.

Look I have to try the beer lol I must just be careful not to overindulge. I will take 6 bottles of Klippies with me.

Is there public transport between Patong and Old Town Phuket because then I might cut out Old Town Phuket completely?

Obviously just go to the Andaman Water Park for my sons birthday.

How big are the bottles you are planning on taking? They are pretty strict with taking alcohol into the country and I think you are limited to a litre each for yourself and your wife. I got hit bringing in two bottles of wine, but they let me off the fine after making me pour out one bottle at the airport. They do random luggage checks occasionally mostly making sure that you aren't bringing in cigarettes.

Many taxis and buses.
But don’t miss the Sunday night market in Phuket old town. Go check YouTube and see what it looks like then decide if you want to miss it or not.

There are also many hop on hop off busses that take you through the whole island and past all the main attractions.

We are 3 couples with our kids. I will put a bottle in each suitcase

Maybe we can spend new years eve at the market. We cant go to drinking holes with kids in any event.

My wife already saw the market on YouTube. Needless to say, she wants to go there.

nice. But i still wonder why people skip Bangkok totally.

If i had a choice over Bangkok or any beach i would always choose Bangkok.

Anyway, each to their own.

Patong and especially Bangla is one of the craziest places in the world on NYE.

I have never been to Thailand before but just judging by how developed it (Bangkok) is I think it will be like visit any other major City around the world. They all obviously have their differences. I am a Urban Planner so I know what to expect from a City of that scale. I want to get away from the City life and western influenced culture.

I am impressed with the public transport system in Bangkok.

Bangkok is one of my favourite cities in the world, I love the place.

Getting on a motorbike taxi and navigating the traffic is an experience on its own.

I don't know if this is running again but the Bangkok Night Tram is a nice way to see some of the temples without the crowds. http://www.buddygroupthailand.com/en/our_business/bangkok-tram-city-tour

My eldest brother was there again in December 2019 and he said "die plek is van die duiwel af.

Hopefully one of the couples can watch our boys one night so that I can go check this place out with my wife.

Fo sure. Same here, there is a reason they called it the city of life. The vibe just hits different and like you say negotiating traffic on a scooter on sukhumvit is an experience all on its own

Also each neighbourhood offers a unique experience with its own magic and culture. It’s like each area has its own mini economy.

Even though I am based here and have spent many years here, I still find secrets and new experiences daily or weekly.
I can’t get enough of it.

Go to OTOP Market in Patong. They have these round outdoor bars right in the middle of the market. You guys can have a few beers whilst the ladies shop.

Nope. Bangkok is different than any other city and it’s got nothing to do with the design or town planning.
It’s the people, the noise, the smell, there js something very much magical there.
The only way I can explain it is it’s like NY without the riff raff.

The massive green spaces in the middle of the city feels like you are in a paradise.
Its just different

There are public buses that runs regularly between Patong and the old town. It is cheap and the kids will like the ride as it is the open air buses.

With regard to the alcohol: I have never been stopped and checked for alcohol. In my brandy days I would take much more than the allowance. I have never seen someone being stopped either. Maybe I was just lucky.

We were there in 2016, just around the corner from Bangla Rd, get offered a laminated sheet with prices for a "F@cking Show"... most of the acts seemed to involve ping-pong balls!
