Thailand Trip Report

I saw flights next month for R9000 return to Johannesburg to Bangkok is that expensive?
That's cheap but hell of a long flight.

There are packages on Flightcenter for under R20k including hotels and transfers for 7 nights in Bangkok. Not really applicable of you're planning to travel for longer or elsewhere.

30 hours though o_O:eek:
Its a pretty standard time unless you fly direct.

Last year Serbia was 24 hour 12 there 12 back.

Portugal looking at 18 there and back. Urgh wish there was direct flights...

HK a few years back was atleast 12 one way zero stops.

I've never experienced even a full day traveling on my six or so trips over from SA (I've done shorter hops from other places). All my trips have been around 17 hours and one 19 hour one because of a delay. I don't think there are any direct flights from SA to Thailand anyway.

Yeah trick is booking early evening flight and sleepign through most of the flight. Its a pity that direct flights arnt an option in most cases and you want a two hour minimum layover to ensure bags end up in final destination.

It's not standard. Cape Town to Doha 9 hours, en Doha to Bangkok 6 hours with 2-4 hour layover is standard

Edit: Or Dubai, depending on airline.

Didn't read the thread. Just came here to say I try and forget about my Thailand trip. Was my honeymoon. After my 1st and only wedding, it is at said wedding that she accused me of sucking d1ck.

What gave you away? The last minute quicky with your best man?

Yep, I took my Japanese girlfriend at the time on a trip to Thailand in 2006 (Both of our first times there) and things fell apart for us, not because I would ever cheat, but because she was super jealous even if a girl just smiled at me. Went back to Japan and had a massive breakup but atleast it gave me the push I needed to leave Japan and explore more of Asia.
No it's because the gaijin was getting the smiles and not her...

Anyone know why the prices are so high to fly to SEA at the moment?

Pricing is almost double what I paid in 2018
Ja, the prices are crazy. I had a CPT to Samui and BKK to CPT return booked for April with Ethiopian Air for R20 700 pp. My wife then had to go in for a heart bypass op and I had to cancel that trip. Re-booked a couple of weeks ago, got the same trip but in July with Singapore Air for R15 000 pp.
We need some R9 tickets to Portugal and SEA.
In 2017 I flew CPT to Lisbon and Porto to CPT with Angola Air for R6000 pp.

In 2013 I flew CPT to BKK return with Qatar for R4600 pp. :D
Exactly. I stayed away when I went, not keen to try it out the next time.

Will be hitting Bangkok and the North.
I love Bangkok, try to get a hotel close to Khao San Road, very nice nightlife without the prossies. Most people says Sukhumvit but I did not like it there.

I have stayed in various places around Khao San and have booked a nice hotel next to the river for July.

I have been to Chiang Mai twice and Pai once. I call Chiang Mai Bangkok Lite because it is just another big city. Pai is nice for a few days, it is like a Thai hippy town.

I won't recommend going to only BKK and the North, try and get to another island you have not been. Koh Chang near the Cambodia border is also very nice, closest airport is Trat.
That is a horrendous flight with Etihad, rather take the Emirates flight.

Cathay starting direct HKG - JNB again in August. If anyone has a long layover in HK then hit me up and I will show you around.

Edit: Anyone except the Surtie degenerates or rvZA.

I've been to chiang mai but just didn't get it. What is special about the place. I didn't see public transport infrastructure so it didn't have a city feel like Bangkok. Just get haggled at every corner with people selling elephant petting which you get in so many places in Thailand.

I read up and the place is popular amongst nomads but I didn't see any and there isn't plugs in cafes and restaurants like you get it many places in Bangkok so not sure why it is popular

You've been there twice. What am I missing?

You are missing nothing, I agree with you.

Was there in 2004, did not really see why everyone raves about the place although we had a great cooking class one day.

Went again in 2012 but our main goal was to go to Pai, we spent very little time in Chiang Mai.

Pai is a great little town, a mixture of cowboy town and hippy town.

That's awesome! Had such an awesome time when we were in HK years ago!
