That nasty shark

@ Jannie
3 Weeks you say I'm sure no one has been misguided about it being complex but you've been at it for a while?

A good idea and one I've proposed. But the best answer is to make sure you never go OOB by helping you (in real time) to buy the next bundle as soon as your first bundle ends. Busy working on this.

There sees to be a perception that Vodacom wants people to go OOB. Not so, I'd much rather prefer you to buy the next bundle at a decent rate.

And Im sure that some of those forumites you simply try and brush off as doing nothing more than installing a MySQL DB on linux have many years of experience on large complex projects.

And some of us don't have any experience on these projects at all but are able to read through documents and make informed questions. I am busy looking at what the 3GPP says about Operator Determined Barring on PDP and it is telling me that:
Barring of MS initiated PDP context activation is invoked in the SGSN. If the SGSN receives a request for an MS initiated PDP context activation which is prohibited by Operator Determined Barring, the SGSN will return a negative response to the request with an appropriate error indication via the BSS/RNS to the mobile station over the radio path.
And the question is why can't the operator not set the SGSN to bar access with the indication "User Enabled Data Cap Exceeded"

I dont think Jannie is denying the theoretical application of the solution based on the technologies used.

I think he is saying without trying to implicate the business that they have organizational fragmentation, legacy system issues etc. Those issues require some redesign and obviously it takes a long time to do that especially on a big system like theirs that is in production and has to have 100% uptime.

But knowing that the redesign and development work is a long term solution why not come up with a short term solution that wont take away from the client?

well he is also saying that their company implements the technical standards applicable and have the best engineering team in the country. He has also said that they are rolling out a new monitoring system which I assume is designed to fit into the latest revisions of documents from the 3GPP - I am busy looking over the documents that the 3GPP and it seems that there is no reason why both short and long term solutions to data lock aren't intended.

I fully agree there should be no technical reasons that make it impossible to implement a working solution within a reasonable amount of time and that has always been the complaint here on MyBB.

Pretty much this. Including the bit about interim solutions.

It's important to remember that many 'interim' solutions have been put in place over the last few years. But we're moving towards a much more integrated, universal system that'll remove the disparity between the payment types.

And that is exactly what we are doing for Prepaid and Topup. Postpaid is only rated after the fact at the moment and it's this we're updating.

But will users - prepaid and postpaid - be able to lock data on their own volition. It is one thing for an ODB to be a means to avoid the operator from loosing money - which lets face it is what would happen with prepaid customers who have a zero balance - it is quite another for the operator to make the tool available for a customer to instruct the operator to lock data (impose an ODB). Once that bridge is crossed and customers can collect data about balances in near real time and can in near real time instruct an ODB to be in place or removed the extension to a machine doing it isn't a leap at all.

@jannie / ockie - is there a data bundle available that does not expire after 30 days available on pre-paid packages? I would like to purchase one that has a 1 year expiry date to protect myself (over and above the R50 cutoff which is now active) from possible OOB Shark activity.

Thanks

Hi

Replied to you via pm.

Is the answer that personal? Can't you tell others here in "generic" terms how to do that?

Hi

Its personal, its usage against his contract number hence me sending him a PM with a breakdown, besides there are tools used to drill down on usage.

Pm me your number and i will check usage stats.

Thanks.

Note to others, my PM to VodacomData was not in relation to the original question above.

Still waiting for answer to that one but not expecting to get it from VodacomData.

I can't find anything on their website.

VodacomData has found a compromise solution to a strange oob data bill that I received.

I'd like to thank him/her/them!

Updated in other thread.

Call centre agent offered to convert the OOB to in- bundle which I gratefully accepted. Thank you - reduced the shark bite substantially.
