The 10 year electricity curse!

The one person I know who works for Eskom (at Koeberg) is planning on leaving in the first quarter of 2008 and live in England. I'm afraid even the staff at these stations know the situation is bad and they are heading for better pastures... :(

There is lots they haven't done right but they certainly haven't ruined the country, they were left with a gigantic job in 1994 considering the mess of a country they left with.
 
Oh, anyone watch the E-news interview with the Eskom CEO?? the news reader made a statement about how pathetic eskom was and before the ceo could reply he thanked the CEO for coming, the ceo stood up during the news and raced off.

Electricity generation is a first-world activity. You don't get it by lighting a bonfire and having a few sangomas dance around it. You need vision, leadership and technical excellence - not an "African" response to the problem. This is what went wrong with HIV - our so-called leaders were looking at anti-freeze, potatoes and beetroot and not trusting the nasty pharmaceutical companies from the west. Result in both cases - catastrophe.
 
What about expanding the Darling wind farm? Is it still experimental?

The Netherlands has a lot of these modern windmills.

Not sure how long it will take to set them up and get them online. We have enough wind.
 
It's going to be so pretty with 100 000 people holding candles in the soccer stadiums.

Before the next decade is out we will encounter more of these sorts of things happening, simply because the people in charge haven't the skills to recognise a problem when it arises.

While I agree generally, only one thing wrong here - they do not have the ability to plan to avoid a problem ;)

We see this on a daily basis. Look at our roads, our hospitals, crime... the list goes on and on.

Because there is such an acute shortage of generation capacity, because electricity demand is growing steadily and because it takes at least 6 years to build the baseload stations we need, it will be 10 years or more before we have sufficient reserve margin to end the load shedding.

Well, I guess they gravy train has a flat now. But since we are living in times of change, everything must be changed and we will plan around bad decisions....

Hence my point about Lateral Thinking.

All unemployed...sent to gigantic factories, each with a bicycle which generates electricity, they sit and cycle for 12 hours each day..generating enough electricity !problem solved
