The 200,000+ km thread

My corsa lite just crossed 260km this morning barely drove 2 tanks of petrol out last 1.5 years since hard lockdown

I hit 200,000km on 2013 VW Polo 250 yesterday - so I can finally post here.

What a day to be alive.

Time to look for a new car, I rate. I'm tired of driving manual so will go with auto and something that has more power.

Which one is the Polo 250? What issues did you have in the 200 000kms?

I have often wondered if the newer 1.0T Polo's would stand the test of time and mileage, I saw one idling and it looked like the engine wanted to jump out of the car, thing was vibrating so much I wondered how long it would be before the mountings needed replacement. I am used to 3 cylinder NA engines, I somehow thought the vibration issue has been refined over the years.

Issues, nothing major really.

I had a cracked manifold, so I had a branch installed.

And the thermostat packed up at 190k odd. I had that replaced too.

It's never missed a service, always servicing it on time. Replaced shocks, bearings and the likes when it was required. Regularly check and change coolant as needed.

The 250 is the one in the pic I attached.

Normally aspirated engine. I have the 1.4.

Not sure about the new TSI's. Will see in a few years how it goes when/if I get one.

Some of the 3 cylinder engines have a counterbalanced camshaft and are as smooth as a 4 cylinder. My Opel Adam had one and I can confirm, it was smooth as butter.

"The cylinder block, in high pressure die-cast aluminum, is designed to reduce radiated and structure-borne engine noise, as well as reduce weight. The high-pressure fuel rail and injectors are also structurally isolated from the cylinder head to minimize the transmission of pulsing, while both the fuel pump and fuel line are acoustically treated.

A further contributor to running refinement is the installation of a balance shaft in the oil sump. Driven by a chain with inverted teeth for quiet running, it counter-rotates at crankshaft speed and is carefully mass-optimized to offset the inherent vibrations of a three cylinder operation."

I have read about that, maybe there was something wrong with the Polo because the vibration did not look okay.

Cool article. 480k Kilos.

Here are 17 cars that’ll do 300,000 miles

Want a car that’ll outlast democracy? These'll see you through the next couple of years until then

simple take away, buy Jap

1994 Honda Ballade. Sold it in 1999 to my friend's wife. She drove it daily from Kirstenhof to Epping and back;. In that time, the only breakage is the window-winding handle

She worked for a fork-lift maintenance co and they maintain it perfectly, free of charge. Oil (Synthetic) every 8000km, new tyres every 2 or so years. It has had 4 clutches and 4 sets of brakes, 12 sets of windscreen wipers and in 2018 had covered 510 000km. A gent from Honda SA came to look at it and published an article in the Japanese factory magazine

She retired at the end of 2021 after working there for 33 years. The boss wanted to give her a Honda Civic but she said its too big for her. The steering pump is starting to become noisy on full lock

What a car, old lady here in my neighbourhood has one, besides the solid build what struck me about it was the brake disks at the rear, for those years it was way ahead of its time.

About 16.4L/100 average.
Last tank did 18.1L/100.
On long distance I can get about 13.3L/100.
I've tried every style of driving and I can't get better economy.
My brother has one. After we used it for a few days on holiday, though it'd be nice to fill up the tank. He has 180 litre tanks...
