The 2016 Way Less Objectivity thread

OK, so the doctor has put me on Glucophage and Cholesterol medication!

He says I have the beginning stages of Diabetes, but he thinks I can get rid of the symptoms through exercise and weight loss.

My cholesterol is not high, about 5.7... but my LDL is quite low - about 0.6.

Do your homework on Statins, cholesterol is not the enemy - medication is.

You can cure diabetes through fasting.

Fanie: I think you should update my method to "Flushing out the fat with excessive amounts of Castle Lite and Jamesons" :P

Anyway.. I am still on 89kg...

Im stuck between 83 and 85  I am in the best shape I have been in years and fitter than I've been in years. I watch what I eat (almost no sugar and a lot less carbs), go to spinning classes at least twice a weak and do 100KM+ on a Saturday on Sunday on my bike.

Any suggestions? Will it help if i take up another form of cardio such as swimming?

So for a total noob, whats the first step?

/Note To Self: Acquire a scale

https://www.reddit.com/r/keto

Read the FAQ and "in a nutshell" pages first.

Also, buy a food scale. I was eating healthy but my portions were way too much for my calorie intake.

For the first time in my life I actually look at the nutrition index on the back of products and it's scary.

Same problem. I'm stuck between 86-88kg. Diet is quite strict. Running 50-60km a week. And I wear the same size pants as I did at school. I suspect I swallowed some rocks somewhere. Otherwise, it might be due to the fact that muscle weighs more than fat. And I've build a lot of leg muscle

Cross train might help. Swimming is a good idea. Otherwise, try running. Nothing burns fat like running.

Fek... up up to 97.

Its probably muscle mass as I have upped the str training but eish, not going to help my pants situation

How carefully do you watch what you eat?
As in weighing each particle of food that goes into your mouth or just being mindful.

In my experience, just being mindful only does enough to keep you at the same weight. As a first step, just get the amount of kilojoules or calories you consume every day.

Something interesting about calorie counting and reading the nutrition charts... have a look at a chocolate bar, that's the same amount of calories as you'd burn if you ran 10km. Are you willing to run 10km every time you eat a chocolate? Neither am I.

Oh...download the myFitnessPal app. It is a brilliant tracker for food, exercise and weight. It also has a built in barcode scanner so if you're not sure what nutrition details to add to your foods, just scan the barcode and enter how much of it you're eating (it usually lists per 100g). It'll then calculate your goal calories for the day, how much you've eaten, minus the amount you've exercised and then you'll see if you're eating too much or exercising too little.

I already use myfitnesspal :)

As for balancing food out with exercise. That part is a bit suspect in my books as it does not take into fitness.

An obese slob would burn much more kJ doing a 10km run than a trained athlete. Hence the guideline that you shouldn't use exercise to counter a bad diet.

That being said, if you do regular exercise every day, you probably could get away with eating a little bit of chocolate.

What I did is buy a big slab and break it up into small blocks. Then after exercise I had a little block as a pick-me-up.
