The 2020 Weight Loss Thread!

I've always been a lurker of this thread and never really bothered to get involved. I recently started binge watching My 600-lb life and realised that I'm probably half way there and here I sit shocked at some of these images.

At 135kg it's my highest weight I have ever been and does not look like it's going down. Drastic measures are required and it's easy for me as I don't feel like I'm addicted to food but rather sugar. I do like energy drinks a lot and that is likely the biggest contributor to my weight. I can do 4 or 5 energy drinks in a weekend without issues and now that I'm working from home and no longer doing a physically demanding job like before things are taking a turn for the worse in terms of my weight.

My Goal weight is 100kg for now and so I have to lose 35kg to reach that goal. I'm not to bothered with the actual weight than my pants and shirt size so obviously when I drop the 35kg I'm hoping to have gone down at least 2 pant sizes not sure if that is a realistic number but that is the hope.
Just to forewarn you there is tons of BS around Weight-loss, so do yourself the favour of self educating a little and learning the fundamentals.
I'd hate for you to spin your wheels and get discouraged following a fad here and there and making minimal progress.
Often, implementing the basics and blocking out everything else is the best way.

It used to. With my previous job it wasn't easy to cook and prepare meals when I get home after a long day at work. For works lunch it would contain mostly bread also.

Now that I'm working from home I have plenty of time to cook proper meals for myself. I just don't know what exactly is considered a proper meal and what quantity to portion the meals. Calculating calories is not that simple. You might think that a single medium sausage cut into pieces into a salad is healthy and end up with way to much calories.

I know what my main problem is with my weight. It's sugar and Fast food. Not necessarily the amount because I don't eat that much. I don't snack. Apart from the Energy drinks when it comes to foo I might get a takeaway like a KFC streetwise 2 and split it into 2 meals for the day. I would cook pasta and only eat around 1pm and that would be enough for the day so I don't think the quantity is the issue it's the type of food and the sugars and carbs it contain and then sugar in general from everything.
You can do it!
The first few days will turn into weeks then months and you'll learn new habits along the way, but remember, just as it took some time to get to where you are, it will take some time to reverse it, so do NOT give up at the first sign of weakness - there will be plenty along the way... Just treat every day as a new opportunity to get to your goal. The best thing about it is feeling more in control of your body... How much easier walking and eventually jogging becomes. As for the energy drinks... Wean yourself off them. You will start to sleep better and sleep is a key ingredient in losing weight and getting fitter. As important as exercise and eating healthy portions.

I think I'm in for a good weigh in end of the week. Just checked now and I'm down to 130kg. Need to start with some exercises. So far on track to my goal weight of 100 by December.

Congrats! PM me if you want exercise routines.
I have a great HIT routine that requires nothing but your body and lasts no more than 15 minutes.
Be warned tho, you will suffer the first few times hehe.

Also, keep up the fluid intake and bear in mind that the 'sad step' (scale) will say you're up after starting exercise while your body takes on extra water to deal with inflammation and recovery. It's all good - just factor it in when you weigh. I recommend weighing no more than once a week and don't let weekly fluctuations get you down - there are SO many factors that go into your weight. It will fluctuate anywhere from 1-3kg (up or down) in any week. It's the monthly figures that are more indicative of success.

I still stick in my normal ideas on this thread

Reduce sugar related food,

Pretty much what I've been doing. No sugar at all. Not only reduced I do not consume sugar since Sunday. No sauces, salad dressings or any drinks with with sugar.

Strictly 1200 calories or less a day max so I increased greens and eating low calorie high protein foods only.

My biggest issue with my weight is sugar and carbs.

Sugar in coffee, milo or tea
Energy drinks
sweats or chocolates
Sugar in home made bread for braais
Bread
Pasta
Sauces with sugars
Salad dressing with sugars.
Fast food

Now my meals contain lettuce, tomato, cucumber and with scrambled egg on top with a tiny bit of cheese. Dinner is either 2 strips of bacon with a salad or sausage cut into pieces and cooked with a salad.

That is pretty much my diet. Want to add tuna or chicken breast but chicken breast is bland so might not go for that.

I'm trying to keep some weight off too.

Making a stir fry now with chicken, but no oils and fats to keep calories down. Gonna throw in some veggies and toss it around.

Where did you get 1200 calories from, it sounds very low. Healthy diet should be adequate, even when you want to lose weight.

If you haven't already, maybe try entering your details into MyfitnessPal as an easy sense check against that number.

Good luck.

Who is doing Keto on here? Got some questions;

1. Is it viable for longish-term weight loss. i.e not just a quick 4KG.
2. Do you use an app - i see there's many sites that will build a keto menu for you. Or do you do your own thing?
3. Anyone find very adverse health effects?

I've read up on the risks of it. Although I do have high cholesterol it is under control for a few years now with medication. But I intend to get tested at least once a month to make sure it doesn't go off the charts.

I've been doing a low-fat, low-calorie diet lately but finding it VERY hard to stick to. Especially since i eat a lot of my meals out. Also bowls of plain pasta and potato with bread are getting a bit boring now :(

Hi guys.
My clothes are fitting a little to snugly lately, so today I've started a 4 week cut.
Weight 92.8kg
Goal is to lose 3kgs of fat and a few cms off my waist.
Posting here for accountability.

Excuse the long post but here goes.

I loosely follow a ketogenic diet. I say loosely as I am on a remote site and food is catered for.

So in general, I'll choose a meat source that's available on the menu and add some greens to it (I generally go for leafy greens). I do not count calories as it's impossible to estimate the calories in the beef stirfry (as an example) as I have not seen it prepared.

What I do avoid (unless there is no choice) is bread, rice, pasta, potatoes and other starches. No sweets of any sorts at present (Those donuts and eclairs do look sooo tempting though!).

My one weakness is coffee (milk, no sugar) and the occasional bullet proof coffee.

Added to that, I do an intermittent intermittent fast (not a typo) as I'll sometimes have my third meal with a few work colleagues to get some social time in.

I exercise 3 times a week and it consists of either the treadmill (something I started quite recently) for 30 odd mins with an average HR of 140s (Where's my bloody points Discovery?!?) or a 45 - 60min stationery cycle (same ave HR).

Now for the metrics:

In the 5 weeks, I've dropped 7kgs but more importantly, I've lost 4cm around my waist (It was the only measurement I took on my body). My pants do feel looser around the thighs. I weigh in weekly at the gym (using a Huawei scale and their app).

Prior to starting this, I had bloodwork done and HDL / LDL / Total Chol was all well within normal range. My Triglyceride was slightly elevated and I will have that retested when I go for my medical clearance tests.

Blood pressure was initially 128/83 (I must do a follow up on that in the morning before coffee)

Blood sugar sits around 4.5 to 5 mmol/L fasted and after breakfast (I can measure daily but don't as I'm not fond of sticking needles into myself).

Resting Heart Rate: 50 - 52 (but if I am really chilled it has dropped to 46)

No chronic meds (not bad considering my age I guess)

Well being
The first two weeks was a bit hard. I had the cravings for something sweet but I managed to avoid anything refined (I'd have an apple or orange to curb the craving). Now I have no cravings between meals and when I fast there is no issue either and I almost have to force myself to have something to eat after the fasting period is over.

I was a bit skeptical of doing fasted exercise at first (Concerns over blood sugar being low and collapsing / fainting etc) but have had no issues thus far (All cardio work). My next step is to ramp up the exercise and add some weight / resistance training twice a week (I'm kind of dreading this as I buggered my shoulders in a fall a few months ago).

Long Term thoughts

Honestly at the moment it is quite easy to stay focused on this as I am away from home but the social pressures of a beer and braai and variety of fast / junk foods when home will be another thing I will have to mentally prepare for.

Do I think it's doable long term? Yes definitely but I will see what my blood work reveals when I go for my medical in November. I am especially interested in my triglycerides and Hb1ac to see what effect a ketogenic diet has on these metrics.

I had more to ramble on but got side tracked with work.
