Gauteng's crime-fighting panic button plan could really work

Instead of providing Gauteng residents with a panic button to quickly connect them with emergency responders, the province should look towards a smartphone safety app that performs the same functions.

That is according to the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) chief executive officer Willem Groenewald.

What about just USSD.

No data required and works in any phone.
Then use towers to determine location.

Misleading headline.

The AA actually have their own product - costing R1999 upfront and R49 subscription per month. They are pitching this as a solution.

So they're actually saying "we can sell this and make billions from it", not "this might work".

Tendaaaaaaaaaa!

I am thinking this will be used to create crime. Get people detracted from what actually is happening somewhere else.

They already have their own armed response app which I have on mine and my families phones. R150 a month.

Unless the emergency responders are privately contracted, pressing the panic button will just result in a long wait... please hold...your call is important to us... please hold...please hold...

Nice tenders though, time to eat.

Movies taught me that you need at least 45seconds to triangulate position. So this idea won't work.

But for reals though, what if you only have coverage with two towers or less in rural areas?

I hear you.

Guess it can be enhanced with you adding location using something like plus code address.

why do these idiots in the ANC come up with these fanciful ideas for people that don't even have Electricity/Sewers/Roads/ basic services
oh right, so the tendas can come comrades! its out time to eat! Mclaren Police cars and Whiskey for breakfast Comrades!

I mean they might as well already advertise they going to blow 16 billion for the ANC birthday party.

It doesn't look like one instead of another is the way to go, both sounds just right, there are smartphone people and there are non smartphone people, get a solution tatworks for both.

The ANC will find a way to destroy this idea through greed, corruption and garden variety incompetence.
