Grabbed a cheapie above ground pool during Black Friday and I’d like to add a proper skimmer (seen on YouTube).

This is a Hayward above ground pool skimmer - do we have anything like this in ZA? (It gets mounted to the outside of the pool + a hole cut)

Which pool did you get specifically..?

It's slim pickings in terms of above ground pool accessories in this country.. there is a website called Intex SA, which seem to be the sole importer of Intex goods here.. in terms of bestway, have not been specifically looking at what they have available here.. that said, most things you may be able to buy from Amazon, if the specific product ships to SA..

Pool skimmer is great for things floating on the surface but, I found with my above ground pool, the things that don't float is the biggest issue..

Fortunately, my above ground pool was designed with inlet and outlet on the side, so a pump can be fitted.. so I have a pump and pool vacuum fitted and that's keeping things crystal clear, along with a small hth floater.. I also keep a pool cover on when the pool is not in use, which helps to stop random things from landing on the surface, pretty much negating the need for a skimmer..

Thanks I figured as much…

I was thinking skimmer + vacuum + sand filter and bigger pump and then I’m properly set to go. (Kit came with a cover so that’s sorted)

Bestway and intex also have a clip on skimmer, but it sits in the pool and will be a) prone to damage and b) can suck air…

I bought a 4.57 x 1.07 Bestway Steel Max Pro - what size pool did you buy and what vacuum have you bought to keep it clean?

I got the Intex equivalent of your pool.. got this vacuum pump for it:

And this pump and filter combo from builders:

Which is the best value for money combo I could find.. the fittings on this is roughly 30 - 32mm..

Thanks - maybe we should just convert this to the redneck above ground pool thread

It looks like that vacuum actually is just a little pressure washer and uses the outlet vs the inlet (so need to see how it catches things). I’d imagine it needs a fairly beefy pump to move it around too.

All these pool vacuums will indicate the flow rate required for proper functionality and the pump and filter combo I bought and linked is in the middle to high flow rate based on the specs for the vacuum and I can assure you, it works well..

Yes, the vacuum used the outlet to create a Venturi that creates the suction required to suck up dirt from the bottom and push the it around.. quite a clever design, as it is capable of changing direction when it hits the sides of the pool..

I also bought one of these - hoping to set it up this weekend. How did you guys fill yours? From the tap or those water delivery people?

If you are in Cape town, tap is cheaper.. I paid about 1k for 15kl to fill my pool..

evening,

, what is the view about hth scientific ,its mostly used for commercial but I'd like to try since I got it for free 25kg at that, its for my fiberglass pool.

and secondly I use hth floater and granules as a top up, my pool is a bit green from constant rain these couple of days. can I add pool acid obviously I'll test alkalinity.

thanks

Got one last year, 5.7kl rectangular shape.
Pretty sturdy yeah. I had to buy 2x ground covers though because it's setup on paving.

The little filter pump was super weak though so we got one of these and it's an absolute treat

Did the filter cost more than the pool?

Im looking for one of these for my 7 year old daughter. How big are these pools. Would the 3.6m ones be good enough?

Are you using an intex pump with an intex pool? I’m considering grabbing one of these but I’d need it to work for a bestway pool (so probably would need to buy fittings).

The biggest ones go up to about 7-8m.

3.6m is fine for a kiddie and far easier to maintain.
Thanks man. I dont have the space for bigger sadly. I might be able to get away with maybe around 5m in size at most..

The filter was about R3600 when I bought it.
Pool was R4200 or somewhere there, but close enough lol. Had the pool about a month before admitting that little pump that came with it couldn't handle the task
