The above ground pool thread

So I finally bought those conveyor belts from the guy shadowman mentioned. He cut 3 units into 4m lengths and they 900mm width. They are bloody heavy and could only get the 3 into my SUV. I told the chap I'm coming back for the 4th one, but I've decided I'm going to cut 500mm off 3 or 4 corners to cover for the pool overlaps.

They were quite dirty and I rinse them off abit. Some areas were not straight and have some bends in, but I'm sure the weight of the pool will push it down. Do you guys think if it will be fine if I just lay them next to each other

Make sure that the pool bottom doesn't get pinched in those high spots between the belts as the pool fills, as that could cause a tear and leak..

Here is my setup for 3m pool. Works way better than the standard pump inside the filter.

Hi Werner

Do you have the Intex or Bestway pool?

Do you mind measure the length across from different sides across. I want actual diameter lenghts from any corner to see if i need to add on the one side.

Thanks

Hi Guys

I am going to buy a pool pump from Takealot. This is my pool and i'm looking for a budget pump for my pool.

These are the options and i am leaning to the 1st one

Are they decent pumps for the price and does a 200W make a difference on a pump. What is a must on these pumps that i need to look for and does the above pumps have those requirements for my specific pool

I just noticed that the pro-pump ones have built in filters, does that mean i don't need to buy an additional filter to clean the pool?

Sorry don't have time to click all the links. My local pool shop recommended the Kreepy Krauly one from Makro etc. I said I've heard they aren't reliable, to which they replied - where else are you going to get a 1 bag pump / filter?

Anyway, I see it now has a 24 month warranty and looks slightly different from the pics online, so I'm hoping it's a newer, better version. (The manual says "new", fwiw).
Working fine so far, for the week I've had it.

Question about power cables - I have 2 extension leads running across my yard for the pump. Would like to find some way to waterproof the plug / socket sections. Hoping someone's done so and has some good ideas for me.

you get those waterproof enclosures for the plugs so you can leave them outside... Leroy Merlin has them.. i think price range between R300-R600 depending on the type you want

Buy three core 16amp rated cable, long enough to cover the run across the yard, push that into a 20mm conduit also long enough to go across the yard and add a plug and socket on either end.. you could even bury the conduit, ensuring any joints are pvc welded properly and have the cable out of the way completely..

You now have a well protected, single extension lead running across the yard..

Pool covers..

Who has and where did you get them from..?

Intex (US) either does not make them for my size pool or do not have stock and the Intex SA distributor only has stock of the larger pool cover..

what size you looking for? im dabbling on getting those solar covered, heard it works well and can be custom made to fit

15'..

If you like swimming on warm water and not being able to get a refreshing cool down in the summer heat, the solar covers work.. they also don't block out the sun fully, so algae is a real thing of you don't maintain the pool throughout winter..

So a long long overdue update - pavers were stuffing me around (finished all paving before xmas - but not the pool area)... They're due tomorrow to place the grass and then I can setup on Saturday.

Some pool area / paving pics.

The red line in the third pic is where I've run electrical conduit under ground - the line running on the house is a still to do item - and i'll probably get the electrician to add a separate breaker for it as I'm a little paranoid ;)

No, just looked at my slip and did some math - I paid R130 / sq m for that lot, which is half the price of fake grass before labour. (to be fair, I should've double-layered that tho.)
Coming back to this - grass with labour set me back:

R145/m2 for old artificial grass (for under the pool) (so bits I guess they can't re-use on new jobs).
R215/m2 for new artificial grass (for around the pool edges) for the bits you can see.

That's G5 as the sub base, crusher dust, levelling and weed guard + grass.

Should be done tomorrow and then I can install Saturday. I hope!

Are you sure it's just not because someone older (and wiser in the the ways of electricity) explicitly told you to do so?

Takealot has stock for the 15' Intex.

They also have the Bestway covers too.

Terrible covers those.. no UV resistance.. one was included in my pool set and lasted about a month in our sun here..

Thanks, but I don't want the plugs exposed to rain / sprinklers. (No Leroy Merlin here in Cape Town, and Builders were useless).
Not too worried about the actual cable - there's nothing in our yard that'll damage it and the PVC is pretty much waterproof already. (Happy to roll it up if there's heavy rain. Planning to pack it all away during winter).

Any electrical place will have outdoor plugs fittings - Voltex, ARB, Plumstead Electrical etc.
Usually a sliding box type with IP rating.

It's been a while (*mutter* paving company *mutter*...) - so I figured i'd provide an update on the pool situation...

Pool is up and filling as I type this (about 5cm of water deep so far!).

Some observations:

1.) Straightening the base liner is hard - start early while its still just 2-3 cm deep and get on your hands and knees and work from one side to the other. You want to get this flat for a) comfort when walking b) any cleaning devices you may have.

2.) I could still feel some hard bumps whilst doing the liner adjustment - this is through the liner + fake grass, luckily they were on the edges (and probably from the g5 substrate the grass sits on) so I just took an old sock, and placed it in that spot (just in case!).

3.) Use a soft bristled broom to push out the liner edges as the pool fills - then you can adjust the legs to make sure they're vertical as you fill.

3.) Fittings fittings fittings....

I initially bought these 38mm Bestway fittings:

preview.kcjk-3092-g6a0.0.photo.X1QEBC9S55.jpg

HOWEVER they don't work on this pool - as only the bigger (or perhaps newer) pools are equipped for them...

I then went to Sportsmans and picked these up:

1154432-1-8fE.jpg

THESE work with the pool - you simply place the one end over the pool fitting and clamp it down --> then you screw the 38mm device on the other end (typically your pump or in my case a Intex Plunger Valve - so I can open / close the valve and stop water loss if I want to service my filter or change device e.g. move to a vacuum).

4.) Some helpful videos - that helped in conjunction with the crappy manual:

I'll let it fill for today, splash around a little - and then work on the pump tomorrow when I have some time.

I'm not going to add much Chlorine for now as a) I want to use the pool today / tomorrow and b) the water is from a tap / treated already. I'll add a Chlorine floater in the interim / shock the pool on a cooler day when I won't be using the pool.

I hope this helps someone else!
