The above ground pool thread

Picked up on of these

Haven't even bothered setting up the pump it came with, looks very underpowered.

Any recommendations on a better pump which could possibly also power a pool cleaner?

Is your one option.. it's what I am using with the following pool vacuum:

the other option is the Intex filter and pump combo with flow rate of at least 1600 gallons per hour or more to power pool vacuum.. this is the 1200 gallon per hour version:

Expect to pay a lot more for the Intex filter and pump combo though..

Intex pump - you’ll need the 1600GPH+ option to drive that vacuum. The 1200GPH linked isn’t sufficient.

I’ve got the 1600GPH model and Takealot were far cheaper than Sportsman’s - also Takealot takes eBucks so that’s how I paid for mine.

Setting it up now so will take some pics.

Makro has the Bestway 4.27x84cm Steel Pro Max at a real good price atm:

Take the Intex back and get a bigger pool for less

Reminds me of when I was a Kid. Dad bought one of those small wire encased Pools. cant really swim in it. Maybe just splash around.

It was collapsible hence no pump or filter. Dad went and took a 25L paint drum he had just painted the house with. Made 2 holes in it and cemented PVC pipes in it. filled it with multiple layers of filtration medium . There was some different sand grades. And made a pump with a 220V big motor and some part that looks like It came from an industrial Washing machine. Well our pool had a custom built slide from a Stainless steel table top and a Custom built pump and filter mounted under the Slide.

I miss the Old timer. He was taken from us far too soon...

Thanks, didn't know about this. Does it let you basically close the outlet? In that case I need one.

Question about vacuuming an Intex pool.

When I vacuum the pool everything just goes straight into the filter. Including leaves, which get stuck in the suction grid thingie (Intex).
Is there any way I can attach another filter of some sort between the vacuum and the outlet? Just to catch bigger things like leaves etc.
I see Intex has a "Skimmer", but not sure where that attaches. Would the vacuum even use it?

What vacuum are you using..?

Yep lock (close), unlock(open) so you can service what’s connected to it or remove and replace with another piece of equipment with no issues.

The 1200GPH is 5k. How much is the 1600GPH? Am not finding it anywhere locally.

That being said, for 5.5k I can get the below. With the right adapters surely this will be a better option? Can also be used for a bigger pool in the future.

That's way too big for your pool.

As an example these smaller pools take 1/2 bag sand and use 0.3Kw pool pumps.

So you're seriously overspeccing there - never mind the electricity wastage.

The Intex 1600GPH Krystal Sand Filter pump I have is available at Takealot, Sportsmans or IntexSA (at least when I was looking.

(Looks like Takealot may be out of stock atm)

As @WAslayer mentioned this is the other option:

This weekend (Saturday) it's going to reach 40 degrees!

I think I may grab a set of these bad boys (4 included) and a floating cooler for the pool:

Not sure if Vacuum was the correct term. I have that Kreepy Krauly 1 bag pump with a normal 'broom' vacuum attached to it. (the broom with the pipe connected to the suction outlet)

I have the 1500 gal bestway pump https://www.takealot.com/bestway-flowclear-filter-pump-1500-gallons/PLID46864824

Strong enough for my pool and cleans nicely, only issue is replacing the filters now and then.

which cleaning products do you guys use, i.e. chlorine, ...
I bought those tablets which i put in a holder and it removes the algea in the pool and the smell is better
So far I've had mine up for a week - and all i've done is had a chlorine floater in for maybe 10 hours total.

Still clean - just running the pump in filter mode twice a day + occasionally using a normal soft bristled broom to clear the walls / floor for 2 mins when I'm in the pool. No algae, smell, discolouration etc so far.

Which tablets? Pic?
I have the floater thing which stays in the pool and I put in powdered HTH once / week. Actually, once every 5 days or so cos it's been so hot / bright and the sun apparently destroys the chlorine, so I figured a bit more frequent is probably better for the next few weeks.

On another note, is anyone using the Intex skimmer? Where does it attach? Does it work well?

How long does everyone run their pumps? How big is your pool?

I was told 4 hours / day in Cape Town, for a 4.5m diameter (15 000 l if full) pool.
If if looks dirty or if we're swimming a lot eg. weekends, then I push it up to 6 hours.
