The above ground pool thread

What is the biggest size pool that one could buy, to actually be able to swim, or at least be able to stretch out. 4m up
Mine's circular, 4.5m diameter, about 1m deep.
I've seen waaay bigger on Youtube tho. Maybe 10m diameter!
I guess you could order one from Amazon if you really wanted.

4.5 is just enough. You can do maybe 3 strokes from 1 side to the other. Or just chill with the family and not feel claustrophobic.

This is my pool. Excuse the mess, I'm busy cleaning up around it.

Had almost 10 people in at the same time and there was still space for another 10. It's holding out nicely. Stable at the bottom, there is some lines at the bottom where the joints were of the old belt. It's quite thick and sturdy. 16mm did a good job and the tarp on top sealed everything nicely.

Need some stuff to make it super clear. Any suggestions

Find your closest, reputable pool shop and take a sample of your pool water with for testing.. they will tell you what is missing to balance the water and provide the right chemicals and respective amounts of each to add to balance the water.. them make sure you ask for home test strips, to test the water weekly and them add whatever is missing, if anything..

Lastly, pickup some small, clear hth floaters which you leave in the pool until empty and then replace.. make sure you adjust it accordingly, see instructions and watch free chlorine levels when testing the water..

Can you just plonk this pool on a grass or do you need some decent surface preparation for this? googling it now but personal experience would be helpful.

You can, it should come with a ground cover included.. however, you want a level surface and one clear of any sharp objects or larger objects unpleasant to step on..

Pretty impressed with how easy this has been to maintain.

Pools been up +-4 weeks now and all I've done is.

1.) Pool floater added in 2x a week for 1 day each time (then removed)
2.) Run the pump every second day for 2-3 hours
3.) Clean leaves with net every 2nd day
4.) Run Intex pool auto cleaner 2nd day

Really surprised at the minimal care required / complete lack of need for extra chemicals and balancing.

Everyone told me that maintaining a pool would be a nightmare - but honestly this is 10 minutes work every 2nd day.

Man, that's a lot of effort to keep the bottom of the pool clean.. find stock and invest in one of these:

Just leave it in the pool and it will clean the bottom when your pump runs.. depending how dirty your pool gets, you would adjust how often you clean out it's filter, which is a 5 minute job..

Just make sure your pump has a minimum flow rate of 1600gph..

+1 for one of these - I got one based off @WAslayer's review.

It's easy, simple to use and I clean it every 2nd day when I run the pump (takes 2-3 mins to remove from pool, open, remove debris, clean filter and put it back). I can add a video here if anyone is interested.

I agree. Most of the mybb comments seem to be "It is a big hole in ground where you throw in money" - whenever I enquire about swim pool. Maybe it is a question of putting some effort every other day as you have done.

p.s. Of course those comments are mainly for regular pool and not above ground it seems.

I tend to think above ground pools have an advantage here:

1.) They hold far less water
2.) They are by design higher - so less debris can get in
3.) The lowest pool floater setting (allows for 30 000L of water - whereas my pool is only 15 000L - so I only add it in 2x a week for a day each time.

Another nice thing is my pump is only 0.3kwh where as above ground units start at 0.75kwh and go up up up. So it's nice and cheap to run too in comparison (both electricity and chemical wise).

If my house was on 800m2 stand or above, I would go for above ground pool. I speculate that it will look an eyesore in cluster townhouse scenario.

I've got 1071m2 - space definitely helps - these can get big!

That's after +-4 weeks and very little care - so I'm happy.
Having the Intex auto cleaner pool vacuum also helps a load too.

The one thing I have to comment on is - having an aboveground pool quickly shows you which of your friends are elitist snobs. Some love it and others turn their nose up, thinking you couldn't afford a real pool or that unless you have a real pool it doesn't count (some have even told me it lowers your property value :ROFL::ROFL:)

Crazy!

A completely removable, non permanent vinyl and steel structure lowers your property value..?

Tell them to get their head read..

:) At least you can pack up above ground pool easily compared to regular pool. On the other hand, I have been told that houses with regular pools don't sell quickly but most of these people have pools of their own so I take it with a pinch of salt. Agents sometimes say that "seller" is selling below market price for houses with pools - another pinch of salt.

You guys doing low maintenance just remember to get your water tested regularly. My pool was wonderful for 2 months with ~weekly HTH doses in addition to having a floater.
Then something went awry (I think the floater ran out and I didn't realise for a few days) and before I knew it the water was going green!
Now I'm adding all sorts of chemicals to get the ph levels and stuff back where they're supposed to be.

The bonus is I now have a test kit and can ensure things stay balanced before we get to the green stage. In theory.

I'm sure at some point I may come unstuck - but for now I'm just keeping a good eye on things.

This has been the easiest video I've seen on the topic - so I intend to just try and follow it if possible.

I do think I'm going to add some pool shock monthly as a preventative (as right now I'm just using the floater 2x a week for a day each time.
