The above ground pool thread

How long does everyone run their pumps? How big is your pool?

I was told 4 hours / day in Cape Town, for a 4.5m diameter (15 000 l if full) pool.
If if looks dirty or if we're swimming a lot eg. weekends, then I push it up to 6 hours.
I run mine based on the pumps flow capacity.. my pump flow rate means I can empty my pool in 2 hours.. I double this and run it for 4 hours every day, irrespective of swimming or not..

Ahhh, so actual calculations! What a concept. Now I need to figure out my pump's flow rate.

I found that a lot of floaters miscoloured the pool other than the hth ones.

This was the pop-up filter. havent seen them around too much but they worked great to kill the algae etc. I used to leave it floating a bit then remove it and wait a bit. Didnt stain my vinyl. I used another one before that did that.

On the same site, this looks like the one I got. Think I got it at Makro. Seems like a different version of the same thing?

Which tablets? Pic?
I have the floater thing which stays in the pool and I put in powdered HTH once / week. Actually, once every 5 days or so cos it's been so hot / bright and the sun apparently destroys the chlorine, so I figured a bit more frequent is probably better for the next few weeks.

On another note, is anyone using the Intex skimmer? Where does it attach? Does it work well?

Intex pool vacuum setup for new owners

Wish I knew all this a couple of months ago. Anyway, hopefully this can help others.

Assuming you have an Intex pool and a bigger, probably 3rd party pump/filter.

All you want want is a standard, manual pool vacuum to keep the bottom clean, but it can't plug in anywhere!

The key to this is the "Intex Hose adapter", which you have to buy on their online store. (NB, Sportsmans Warehouse will tell you they stock these, but they actually sell the "B line adapters" which is not the same thing).
Here's a pic:

They're based in Cape Town so quick shipping if you're here.
SO this screws into your "suction" connector of your pool (outlet valve?). There's a plastic filter end screwed on there. You unscrew it and screw this on. Then switch them back when you're done cleaning. Still trying to figure out a way I can leave this on permanently, and maybe just add some kind of filter to the end.

Then you just attach as many segments of normal pool hose as you need.

AND on the other end you connect a standard pool hose adapter (if required) plus whatever "head" you need.
(I got a brush as the pool shop guy was afraid the wheeled vacuum would be too powerful and would pull in the fabric of the pool. I'm not so sure about that, but since I didn't follow other advice in this thread about getting the bottom perfectly flat (wasn't posted yet), I have some folds, so seemed like a reasonable precaution.)

Nearly forgot- there's a telescopic pole connected to that brush. Seems obvious now but I was a complete n00b and didn't even know I needed that part too.

Things to look out for:
Screwing and unscrewing the hose adapter can put a lot of strain on your outlet valve, so be careful. The vacuum pressure is quite high, so you don't need to screw it tight.
Also, forcing on the hose segment to the adapter does the same thing, so what I've been doing is put 1 segment (a metre long) onto the hose adapter, then screw the whole thing in.
Then plug the hose segments into each other. I reverse this when I'm done. Disconnect the entire hose section except for the 1 piece connected to the adapter, then unscrew that as a unit.

The brush attachment seems to disturb the dirt, which means it doesn't all get sucked up. So if you're too enthusiastic with your sweeping, everything looks clean, but later on the dirt just settles back down to the bottom again. Hence I may try the wheeled vacuum attachment after all.

Also, if your pool is very dirty or has leaves, then these tend to block the secondary filter on the outlet / suction valve, killing your vacuum pressure. You need to stop the whole process and clean it if this happens. Hence my request for a skimmer or something earlier in this thread.

Any suggestions on how to improve this setup are welcome.

Hope this helps someone else. Took way longer than necessary to figure out. And pool shops are not much help, I spoke to several and most of them are like "above ground pools - meh".

Ghetto Extension plug water protection

Since this is the "ghetto" above ground pool thread, here's my ghetto plug protector / enclosure. It's not exactly IP67 or whatever, but it should work fine for anything less than heavy rains and submergence.

Pics are pretty self-explanatory. Honestly it's main job is to stop the plug getting wet when the sprinkler's on.
And it cost like 20 or 30 bucks.

Man, that's a lot of effort to keep the bottom of the pool clean.. find stock and invest in one of these:

Just leave it in the pool and it will clean the bottom when your pump runs.. depending how dirty your pool gets, you would adjust how often you clean out it's filter, which is a 5 minute job..

Just make sure your pump has a minimum flow rate of 1600gph..

For those with an Intex pump, I managed to find spare pipes at Brights Hardware (at Milnerton branch in CPT)

R120

This beats Takealot's offering
R309

Since my pump is pretty far away from the pool, I was looking at extending the pipes.
The best solution I found was to add an adapter between the two pipes;

I've ordered it from https://shap3d.co.za/

Dropping in the thingiverse files on the website and proceeding from there

Will let you guys know how it fairs once received

Damn, they dont stock the type 'B' filter cartridge either. Cant find them anywhere.

WAIT! You get an automatic pool cleaner for Intex pools??? I had no idea!
I mean, it costs almost as much as my pump did, but that would make life far easier.
(I think I saw that pic somewhere on this thread but I thought it was still a 'push it around yourself')

Nope, it's all automatic.. just connect it to the outlet inside the pool (not the inlet, as it does not suck) and it will do the rest..

Eh? So where does the dirt go? Does it have a container space inside?

Yes.. the bottom pulls out and that's where all the dirt collects.. because I have a pool cover, I don't have too much dirt and clean it out once every 3 weeks or so..

What is the biggest size pool that one could buy, to actually be able to swim, or at least be able to stretch out. 4m up

I just watched a video. Makes sense now. I think I need to get a cover first, then see.
