You buy them per square metre right? The prices add up fast. Mine is one of those round 4.5m diameter ones. Can't recall the area. maybe 20 square. Could be more.

@Mortymoose also uses above ground swimming pools
He just bought a new one recently
Maybe he can offer advice on what he put his pool onto for protection

Saw these now at Builders, it's quite sturdy I must say

Yeah, it's R230 m2. For me it will work out to R2300. But pricey for me. I bought a tarp rather instead

Link please

This is my pool, i'm looking for a tarp or something i can put under it. Since it's a 3.04 x 0.76m i guess i would need a 10m2 tarp right

It's this insertion rubber below, brights don't have a link.. cheaper at brights, 190p/m if I recall..
This could be a budget option too, currently using under the gym machine at home but could work under a pool as well I guess

What are you planning to put under your pool?
I'm putting mine on paving (I know, not ideal. Def taking it down after summer tho)
and I'd like something to even out the bottom and maybe soften it a bit when we're in the pool.
Previous posters have mentioned everything from "vinyl things" to "old converyor belts" to "rubber liners". Not having much luck finding any of those so far.
Artificial grass for now - if and when this pool breaks (and it’s been a success) then I’ll cast a slab or do an in ground pool.

I’m basically using this as an experiment to see if I a) can take care of a pool b) want a pool long term.

Which is better of the 2

Intex ground cover or a tarp to put the pool on.

I bought this at Builders

Not sure if i should have gone with Intex pool cover

What's your take on it

Bought the pool cover from Takealot and ready for pickup later

Update - found some rubber 'sheet' stuff at Mambos. Only 3mm thick, but at least that's better than just the thin ground sheet the pool comes with. R200 per running metre and it's 1.5m wide.
Will try to get a pic later.

Can't find it on their site. At the Kenilworth branch they have a section at the back with their floor stuff - those interlocking tiles like Builder's sells; vinyl rolls, non-stick rolls and so on. Also that "furry" rubber matting stuff.
And then there's a roll of this black stuff lying there. It looks very similar to those interlocking tiles, but on a roll, and maybe a bit softer.
The guy there said people have been buying it all week to put under pools.

Thanks, Kenilworth in the Cape

Nice, but at that price you could get fake grass (has rubber underliner) and the area leveled by someone else.

It seems damn expensive to find a nice under liner - the cheapest good option I found was old rubber conveyor belt off fb marketplace at R40 sqm.

Due to where I reside and the added fact that my Mansion belongs to a mining company I have only used porty pools for the past 25 years, in two different houses, I have had 5 of these and placed them on grass, desert sand with builders sail under. All was in vain as my kids and some drunken mates liked making that tidal wave in the centre of the pool and the ground around the pool eventually turned into a marsh.... the pool sank one side... the cement I had laid did the same thing and cracked eventually.

The old type of pools were that thick vinyl and my latest pool is a different thicker material and This pool I put up a month ago Is halfon cement and half on lawn, just so it can be near my braai. I have taken the old vinyl lining from the deceased pool , cut it up and laid it under the new pool, as I have done with all the old/new pools...

I buy these pools budgeting for them to die evey three years, then I have spent about 8 bucks a day.

The other thing with above ground pools that I learned twenty years back is the fact that those little pumps are way too small for them and I have used a proper pool pump on my setup....

No, just looked at my slip and did some math - I paid R130 / sq m for that lot, which is half the price of fake grass before labour. (to be fair, I should've double-layered that tho.)

People are using them around here to store rainwater.

I like the idea of using the old pools vinyl as a base for the new pool - nice and cost effective recycling!
