The above ground pool thread

I'm sure at some point I may come unstuck - but for now I'm just keeping a good eye on things.

This has been the easiest video I've seen on the topic - so I intend to just try and follow it if possible.

I do think I'm going to add some pool shock monthly as a preventative (as right now I'm just using the floater 2x a week for a day each time.

cool, will give it a watch. I'm still a total n00b at this. Was reading the instructions on the test kit and converting gallons to litres to figure out quantities. Even odds I put in the wrong quantities of stuff.
At least my pool's blue again, for now.

This is my pool. Excuse the mess, I'm busy cleaning up around it.

Have you tried something like this in your pool ? Link

I bought this when it was about half the price:

Works well - tie a rope to a tree - attach this to said rope and off you go - you just need to be slightly higher than your pool.

It’s been 6 weeks now, water is still clear - still only running the pump every second or third day and still only adding the floater then.

No other chemicals added. Still looks good.

Very low maintenance - still happy - takes all of 5-10 mins every second or third day.

Amazing. What size is your filter? 1 bag or 2?

PSA:

Check your pools metal poles for surface rust (typically where the pole was scratched during packaging / transit / installation).

I'm seeing some small nicks where surface rust is forming - better to treat it now, or in the long run your pools lifespan will decrease drastically.

I'm looking for a sand filter for my pool, but out of stock everywhere, and I dont want to pay R7K for a pump/filter.

I am using this one and works well.. powerful enough to push an automatic pool cleaner as well..

1.5"
Edit:

The connectors do have a slight taper, so could support 1.25" as well, but I am using the 38mm Intex pipes with this..
Me too.
Have that filter and those pipes.

Seems to work well except for 2 things.
You can't run the filter on bypass and circulate the water.
The valve / switch thing is extremely tight and apparently has a reputation for breaking easily. I treat it very gently.

Look out for specials at Makro, I think I picked it up for a couple hundred cheaper.

Edit: BTW I measured the flow rate manually (manual is useless) - 10 litres / 8 seconds. (So about 3 hours to cycle my 15Kl pool

That's the flow rate the manual states though.. my manual anyway.. I have the non-kreepy-krauly version of the pump..

Also, my valve isn't very tight at all.. seems fine to my hand..

Good to see my math abilities are still up to scratch.

I wonder if my valve can be loosened. Like I need to hold the entire unit when I turn it otherwise I rock the whole thing.

Edit: What's yours branded as?

Had no brand.. was literally just in a brown box in builders..

Obligatory update - still going well.

Some issues:

RUST! On the horizontal supports. This is the worst one. I’ve covered with clear Rustoleum so there’s no oxygen and hopefully that means it won’t spread…

That being said I’m probably going to 3d print new T pieces and go with galvanized poles like this guy (far less hassle than treating or using expensive bestway replacements that will just rust again).

Forgot to mention - I haven’t tested the water since I’ve had the pool.

Almost 10 months in and I simply leave the HTH floater in, run the pump and occasionally shock it (twice when I’ve left it for over a week in winter).

No issues, very little upkeep - the only thing I’d like to add is a shade cloth leaf net for summer (as it’s windy here and I don’t want to always be scooping leaves out of the pool)!

This definitely depends on your sun exposure.
I found that as we moved into Autumn and the sun angle changed, my pool got waaay less sun and the water stayed clean for days.
In full summer it gets sun from about 7am to 6pm. That needs much more attention, as I found the hard way.
But it's better for swimming.

I eventually took it down in winter. Need to fix my ground, then put back up in a couple of months.

Mine is grass green, and with water restrictions I cant drain it and fill up again. Here in the Vaal we battle with pools, lot's of iron oxide in the air, and when it rains your pool will go green, or even black. It's a money pit.
