Alfa Romeo has rolled out a series of model-year updates for its Giulia and Stelvio. Here’s how much you’ll pay in South Africa for the latest iterations…

Although Alfa Romeo launched revised versions of its Giulia and Stelvio in South Africa just last year, the Italian firm’s local division has now made a series of further updates.

The Stellantis subsidiary says the “basic technical specification” of both the Giulia sedan and Stelvio crossover remains unchanged. Indeed, the most significant revision is the scrapping of the Stelvio Super derivative in favour the Stelvio Veloce, effectively aligning the SUV range with that of the sedan.

PRICING: Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio updated for 2022

Barely a year after the facelifted versions of Alfa Romeo’s Giulia and Stelvio were launched locally, comes another series of subtle updates for the 2022 model year.

The large sedan and crossover have received numerous specification enhancements, including the fitment of a limited-slip differential to the Giulia 2.0 Veloce.

In the Stelvio’s case, the ‘Super’ specification grade makes way for a Veloce model in the four-cylinder variant, bringing it into line with the Giulia range. The Stelvio Veloce also gets some design enhancements in the form of a body-colour exterior kit, dark matte exhaust tips, black anodised brake callipers and black roof lining inside.

In terms of creature comforts, both the Giulia and Stelvio Veloce models both receive an upgraded sound system, now with eight speakers, as well as six-way electronically controlled “luxury sports seats” with four-way lumbar support and a memory function for the driver. In addition, the Stelvio models gain an electrically operated tailgate.

2023 Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio gain mid-life design updates

New LED lights, upgraded digital instrument display and Competizione launch edition form the changes

The Alfa Romeo Giulia saloon and Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV will gain a new special-series variant as part of a mid-life update, along with new exterior design details and bolstered equipment.

Set to go on sale in the first quarter of 2023, both models receive a host of changes to their respective front ends, including a new front-grille design with improved air ducts.

Each car gains upgraded LED headlights, which now have three modules in a design reminiscent of the classic Alfa Romeo SZ and later Brera.

They feature adaptive capabilities, welcome and goodbye functions and a glare-free high beam, which detects traffic to avoid blinding other drivers.

Inside, the Stelvio and Giulia receive an improved digital instrument display, which measures 12.3in across and offers three different layouts, named Evolved, Relax and Heritage.

The Evolved setting presents information centrally, while Heritage features details inspired by Alfa Romeo models from the 1960s and 1970s. Relax is free of detailed information.

In addition, Alfa Romeo has revised the specification hierarchies of both cars, with Sprint and Veloce now the only ones offered.

The New Giulia and Stelvio are making their debuts. These two award-winning models have won over the international community thanks both to the brand's trademark excellence-perfect weight distribution, best-in-class driving dynamics, top-of-the-line technological and motor solutions-and to the timeless design which makes any Alfa Romeo vehicle a long-lasting "moving work of art". Today, Alfa Romeo's distinct take on the beauty of Italian design has been made even more seductive and contemporary on both models with stylistic interventions being made on their fronts to create a clear and strong family feeling with the Tonale. The New Giulia and Stelvio will be available starting from February 2023.

A new "look"

Standing out on the fronts of the New Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio, the front grille, where the logo is positioned, and the lower grilles of the two main air ducts have been given a unique finishing which provides a contemporary reinterpretation of the famous and distinct "Trilobo" grille. In fact, the headlights are the main new feature on the front. Starting today the "3+3" lights make their debut on both models with new Full-LED Adaptive Matrix headlights. This creates both a strong family feeling with the Tonale and, at the same time, recalls one of the brand's famous features which was introduced by the iconic Alfa Romeo SZ Zagato and the Alfa Romeo Proteo concept car. The three modules make up the New Giulia's and Stelvio's unique frontline and supply daylight, a dynamic turn signal ensuring the best lighting conditions thanks to the introduction of two sophisticated technologies: the "Adaptive Front Lighting System", which constantly adjusts the dipped beam headlights based on the speed and driving conditions, and the "Glare-Free High Beam Segmented Technology", which in poor lighting conditions automatically detects both directions of traffic to avoid blinding the other cars; and finally the"Welcome and Goodbye" device, a function which turns on every time the driver closes or opens the car. All of this means more efficiency-in terms of duration and energy savings-and greater safety due to less stress on the eyes and increased driving comfort. The layout of the group of rear LED tail lights, which provide the perfect combination of style and sophisticated technologies, have also been made over to accentuate both models' sporty souls. Specifically, the New Alfa Romeo Giulia has new tail lights in glass with a transparent finish, while those on the New Stelvio come in smoked glass with a glossy black finish.

Plus: a new grille, new tech and the unveil of the ‘Competizione special series’

This is the new Alfa Romeo Giulia. And Stelvio. And by ‘new’, we of course mean ‘mildly revised’. And by ‘mildly revised’, we of course mean: new lights! A warm welcome back if you will, to two of the best-looking cars in their class.

And in news that’ll surprise nobody, they remain… good-looking. Alfa’s tidied up the front of both cars – a new finish on the front and lower air duct grilles – which now feature ‘3+3’ full LED adaptive headlights. They’re a nod, apparently, to the SZ Zagato and Proteo concept cars. Surprising references.

The new lights up front are matched by tweaked rear lights on both cars, but otherwise the design has been left well alone. Inside there’s a new version of the touchscreen, configurable to showcase either Alfa’s new design language, or its old one. There’s also the chance to get a Non-Fungible-Token for each model (nope, still no idea).

Same engine line-up, same optional AWD and same optional limited slip diff (model specific). Though a new addition arrives in the form of the ‘Competizione special series’. These cars take the ‘Veloce’ trim as their base, are available with any engine, and feature light grey paintwork, red brake calipers, 21in alloys, a Harman/Kardon stereo and leather on the dash.

Minor treatment has been imparted onto the ageing but timeless Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Giulia models until their replacements arrive in the future. In addition, the Italian automaker has launched a Competizione trim for both models.
