Johannesburg - Honeymoon murder accused Shrien Dewani needed to find a way out of his marriage without getting disowned, a British court heard on Tuesday, according to a UK news report.

The Telegraph website quoted lawyer Hugo Keith, who was representing SA authorities at his extradition hearing, as saying: ''Dewani told [a witness] in April 2010 how he was engaged and had to get married.

''He said although she was a nice, lovely girl who he liked, he could not break out of the engagement because he would be disowned by his family. He went on to say to the witness he needed to find a way out of it."

The unnamed witness was prepared to testify against Dewani, the court heard.

The 31-year-old Dewani stands accused of plotting to kill his Swedish bride, Anni, 28, by arranging a fake hijacking in Gugulethu. She was shot dead in November last year.

Dewani at psychiatric facility

Dewani's extradition hearing started in the Belmarsh Magistrate's Court in south east London on Tuesday.

The Telegraph said the court was packed with members of his and Anni's families, while Dewani sat slumped in the dock.

He was being held on bail at a psychiatric facility in the UK, after reportedly suffering from severe post traumatic stress.

The charges against him included kidnapping, robbery with aggravated circumstances, conspiracy to commit murder and obstructing the administration of justice.

Taxi driver Zola Tongo, who had driven the newly-wed couple to dinner on the night of the murder, is already serving an 18-year jail term after he made a plea deal with the State, in which he testified that he had helped Dewani find people to kill his wife for R15 000.

So if this is true, his motive was indeed financial. It was not a case of him benefitting from her death by way of inheritance or life insurance, but by preventing his family from disowning him.
 
Well, doesnt look like Dewani will suffer from constipation anymore. Good for him, he deserves it if thats what he did.

Looks like SA Gov has enough evidence too, lets hope they dont fluff it.

Pretty irrational fear for such a high profile case involving a British citizen, but it could be argued.. they'd have no problem finding previous examples.

Cele's borderline retarded comments won't help though, why on earth he's head of police when he clearly knows next to nothing about policing and the law.
 
Psychiatrist: Dewani hearing voices

Cape Town - Honeymoon murder accused Shrien Dewani is suffering from paranoia and is hearing voices outside his hospital room, a neuropsychiatrist told a UK court on Tuesday.

Dewani is accused of conspiring to have his wife Anni killed while on honeymoon in Cape Town. He denies the charge.

Eyewitness News quoted the psychiatrist, named by British newspaper The Bristol Evening Post as Dr Paul Cantrell, as telling the Belmarsh Magistrate’s Court in London that he examined Dewani a few times.

He confirmed that Dewani was thinking of killing himself.

Dewani told the doctor that he could also wait until he gets to South Africa, in order to make authorities there look stupid.

The suicidal comments coupled with his paranoia led doctors to believe that he could harm himself. Dewani also apparently became suspicious of the doctor.

Cantrell said that travelling in a vehicle triggered memories of what happened to his wife, The Bristol Evening Post wrote.

No ways! If he's already throwing all and madness at avoiding a trip to SA, I want to him go nuts when he finally gets a day in court here. And if he's hearing voices already, it's only going to get better. This is one soapy they have to show on national television :D Anyhow, Bubba will be grossly disappointed if Dewani doesn't pitch ;)

Saw on Sky recently they want to introduce measures to help relatives of victims deal with the traumas of being involved in court cases but guess who oppose it. [-]human[/-] criminal rights morons
