The Asic thread

Yeah but 1050ti though.. lol... and of course I kid, I have two in my one PC, and mined with them before. Currently getting around R32/day with them, fyi.

Looking now, I can land GTX 1080 ti cards from Amazon at around R9500/card. Let's take four of those and call it an even R40k.
With a board, PSU, RAM, HDD, risers, etc. we're pushing R50K-R55K, and that puts it on par with locally-priced S9 ASICs.

Now, with the S9 pushing around R10K/month, and each 1080ti doing around R2300/month, the numbers start looking pretty darn comparable.

The only thing the GPU rig will have going for it, imho, is the flexibility in switching algo, which turns out, could be a big deal... (thinking x11)...

1080ti also has decent resale value, s9 not so much when a new models comes out.

Oh, ASICs get hot. I have to extract directly to the ceiling void and the room is still warm. Ta for the info. It's harder to cool GPUs for that reason IMO... no way to send the hot air directly outside. I love the idea of a dedicated shed with insulation and extractor on one side / air filters on the other... all cost $$ tho.

Luckily I got the one I have at a good price.. otherwise I would have actually looked for a 10ft shipping container.

Pad the walls with isoboard and air in and vent directly out.

Currently got one 10" fan in and vent all three out the window. Converted the window to make less holes.

Though considering adding a second fan to increase air in. R350 from builders.

The flexibility of gpu mining is nice to lay back on but also the deployment time. All parts are readily available now so one can be up in like a week, maybe 2 tops.

I will say that while 1080ti's are nice to have mining since they so damn powerful, they are pretty darn hungry on juice. Got 3 psu's just for that one rig. Their roi seems to be the worst as well ( if you use evetech pricing ).

On the asic side, I'm waiting for canaans 821 and 841 series asics and their pricing.

So Happy New Year and all that, chaps!

The general going price for the Baikal Giant B on Alibaba seems to be in the region of US$8200-, so, um, no thanks.

Was thinking some 1070s, if I manage to find some. The profitability of the 1080ti are pretty good when compared to the other cards, no doubt, but like you mention, they tend to draw a bit of juice, and I figure I might be able to pick up some 1070s for cheaper.

Thoughts on AMD cards instead? RX480s still worth the bother? RX580?

Good luck finding 580s, as soon as stock hits they sell out.
Rather look for Nvidia cards, much less hassle.

Rx580 and rx570 does really well on cryptoknight. If you can get cards with samsung memory then you can get 1000hs with rx580. My rx580 4gb cards does 900hs atm.

Right, last non-ASIC question, then I'll move it across, but should I rather be looking for 8GB, or are 4GB cards still good to go?

That would depend on what you intend mining, saw a video of a guy that used 1060s with 3GB.

Will try find the link.
Yeah I reckon you could probably mine most things with 4GB cards, probably not worth the extra $$$ to get the 8GB version of whatever if the rest is all the same.

Just checked on Nicehash, there is a daily R5 difference between the R580 4GB and 8GB. Also, the 1060 (non Ti) makes R6 more than the 580.

So less power and more $, makes sense to me.
Also easier to find.

That's likely by chance IMO

Started the Trade Assurance process now with one of the Alibaba clowns. What a mission to get all that paperwork filled out, and have of it I needed to translate, and they will probably come back and say "Oh sorry, no trade assurance option available".

Will see, and keep you posted.

I got no trades assurance, there is a limit to what they can do per month story. Gave up there and there

So Alibaba is not looking too bad ATM

No it's still stupid expensive, but I'm reaching out about an x10. Still seems pretty profitable at the moment, and if I can get it sooner rather than later at the right price, maybe it'll make for a worth-while consolation prize, seeing Bitmart shafted me (Yes, I will blame them because of reasons).

You could fly to China for 8k to buy a unit.

Just saying :p
