The Asic thread

Yeah they haven't responded to my request yet, but yeah, like I said, I fully expect some resistance...

I think if I left mine on the sidewalk with a note saying "Free to a good home" they'll still be there the following week (sans the boxes) :D

I wonder if they'll have vintage appeal and value 50 years from now. I should stick them in the garage for my grandsons to sell on eBay or whatever it's called then.

So I had another glitch early hours of this morning. I discovered that one of the miners wasn't hashing. I checked physically and noticed the red light flashing at the back indicating a fault.

Troubleshooting involved rebooting to reloading firmware to disconnecting all but 1 hashboard to inspecting the logs.

The system log gave me a clue - after bootup it gave an error about fan 1 saying it wasn't operational and it then shut down the system. Looking at the status screen showed fan 1 at 0 RPM.

Physical inspection showed it was working fine. At reboot it spins up nicely and winds down at the point of hashing as usual, but right after boot the red LED starts indicating a fault.

I removed the fan at the back (inlet) and replaced with one from one of my D3s that hasnt been comissioned yet - PSUs are only landing this week. Problem solved. Looks like the fans own RPM reporting system is faulty. I may be able to update firmware to bypass the check but ill not do that - juts going to have to replace the fan. So the fan receives instructions to speed up and slow down OK and responds to them well but for whatever reason doesnt report its speed back to the controller. Ah well. Fans are relatively cheap. Just annoying.

I'll post the bit in the log for everyones benefit a bit later from PC.

*EDIT* here it is:
Nov 20 02:10:45 (none) local0.err cgminer[361]: Fan Err! Disable PIC! Fan1 speed is too low 0 pwm 20

Glad it wasn't something serious. If the old wives' tale is true, you're in for one more ;)

That Baikal X10 is making me jelly.

Yeah, don't touch. There are people reporting they are only receiving their miners in this batch (December) after ordering in the previous batch (landing now). Apparently being a first time buyer means you don't get any love when they've stretched themselves on the pre-orders and having to keep regulars happy. No apologies, just a simple "next batch, you'll get one".
I want to see a month down the line what quark and qbit are pulling - after the latest batch has had a chance to settle - before the new batch lands. They sound too disorganised for my liking.

And their December batch is sold out as reported earlier. I placed an order for 3 a day after they asked how many I wanted, and got the dear John letter the following day.

Anyone know where to get a decent priced 12v 120mm 5 pin 4000-5000 RPM bearing based fan from? I see many offering them from abroad and a few local sellers offering them for R1200 or thereabouts... If anyone knows of a decent priced local supplier, please let me know. Going to check mantech now.

Think I will stick with buying some L3 plus and S9

Think I will stick with buying some L3 plus and S9

I think the S9 is a little bit more of a sure thing. Sure, it doesn't hit those same numbers as the others, but it's more consistent, and I believe more of a sure thing given the reach and stability of SHA-based coin.

Slightly off topic, but I'm having difficulty seeing the difference between the S9 and the T9, other than the significantly less efficient power consumption (and performance) of the T9...?? What am I missing?

OK, so in the mean time, my PSUs for the D3's arrived today. While I wait for the replacement fan to arrive in the next week, my son and I figured out how to gyppo the system to send the fan tachometer (TAC) signal from the working fan (yellow cable) to on-board socket for the faulty fan.

Since the faulty actually fan works fine including it's PWM pin to control speed, all that was required was to fool the board that the faulty fan was actually spinning OK (which is was in reality). Since both fans spin at the same speed, this works a charm.

And Bob's you're father's sister's husband!
That Stellenbosch Uni $$ coming right back to me... thanks son! :D

Estimating a price of 2000USD imported I'd say no but depends how badly you want to get into it.

Would that also include customs? On the bitmain website they are sold out. Im taking a rough guess here and assuming once they get stock, the next batch might only reach here late Jan or even Feb next year. In that time I could get almost my full return back if it runs constant at the current R10k pm (according to nicehash)

Would include everything. Customs would only be VAT on 110% of the purchase price. I got a Avalon miner and didn't pay any additional duties.
