True - not all DSGs are bad. He test drove the new i30 and said it was one of the few DSG boxes that actually works, unlike Ford and VAG. But again recommended against buying one if you are going to crawl a lot in traffic.

For me a plain old slushbox is still best.

Is the DSG gearbox tech licensed to manufacturers/supplied by one 3rd party company to them or is DSG just an industry acronym now and each makes their own version?

I noticed that. I wonder why though, cannot be reliability as I've seen it's rather reliable. But I did learn a few things in that clip. Never thought stop and go traffic would be a problem for DSG. Although I have read it's better to put the car in sport mode when driving in heavy traffic so that it doesn't change up to fast.

The dsg is in a whole different league then for example the corolla quest auto I drove this week. That thing is slow and the gear change while ok at normal speeds, is nasty when you push it.

Honestly I come from a Volvo automatic (no dual clutch) to an Audi Stronic and drive daily in Sandton traffic, I don't see an issue at all with the gears.

When I say problem I'm talking about the fact that it might negatively affect the gearbox. I drive a dsg equipped car, very comfortable in everyday use.

Sorry I thought, you meant I wasn't smooth or had trouble with traffic !

Saw the new A5 & A4 yesterday. The interior is very contemporary and quite boring, but u quite liked it. A4 is a big car. I was really bummed to learn Audi is dropping the 3.0tdi in the A4?

No it's very smooth, but slow moving stop-go traffic puts lots of wear on the it, unlike in a conventional auto.
VWSA recommends putting the 'box in sport mode when in traffic to save your clutch pack. There is a service bulletin out for it. We had a clutch pack start failing in a 1.4 TSi at around 40k km. There is a known issue with the 1.4 TSi and DSG combo across the whole VAG range in the earlier iterations of DSG. VW tried to tell us that the climate here kills the things, they don't have this issue in other markets. I would strongly recommend extending the service/warrenty plan as long as you can. It wasn't that expensive to do for us compared to what a clutch pack, mecha unit or turbo replacement costs. We now have a 2016 1.4TSi Jetta 6 in the home fleet and it seems to be behaving a bit better than the 2011 Jetta 5. The DSG system is definately alot more stable. We also all know to put it in sports mode in traffic now, it hurts the fuel consumption figures though.

Just to clarify slow moving traffic may prematurely wear a DSG box? The dual clutch?

No. There are older DSG boxes, wet clutch versions and dry clutch versions. Some of the older dry clutch had issues. Don't pay attention to people who post the same DSG issue links (same youtube video) over and over again. A manual car also has a clutch which wears in traffic. For DSG in very slow traffic, you can put it in M to keep a gear... just like a manual car.

Sport mode will just keep it in 1st or 2nd for longer in very slow traffic. In additional sport mode will make throttle response faster, hurting fuel economy. Use M and 1st or 2nd gear if you're worried.

We just put it in sport. Try telling my Dad and wife to drive an "automatic" car like a manual in traffic just causes confusion

Other solution, don't put it in sport while it's under motorplan, hope it breaks before the end of the plan and only once replaced start putting it in sport !

Took them 2 weeks to do the last claim, and we had to fight. The thing drove like crap shuddering slightly on changes from first to second and second to third and they said it's "normal" eventually the other service advisor sorted us out.
So I'm going to try avoiding that lol.

I'm sitting in Brackenfell now, traffic is. Had the car in sport mode for most of the time in traffic. Somewhat annoying if you are like me and dislike high engine revs. It holds gears a lot longer. And for some reason it feels as if it's pulling a bit stronger as well.
