Sad but true, the Audi dealer is completely entitled to their response. It is not as rare as you think. There is no way that you can assume that the "check engine light" coming on again has to do with the same fault as before. Any sensor anywhere in the engine down to the cat that picks up a fault will light up the "check engine" light. They need to assess before they say anything else.

Buy your own scanner so you can check the fault code yourself. In many cases you can clear it and it won't come on again for a while. At least then you have more to go on.
Shot. Ordered a scanner.

Anyone here (in Cape Town) use Ferroli Performance Centre in Killarney Gardens for services etc..?
http://ferroli.co.za/about-us/

A couple of colleagues with Audis recommended them 2 years back.

I’ve heard positive things, but more for the racing side of things.

My own car has been at Wackers in Paarden Eiland before.

Not the cleanest or best managed, but was reasonably priced and the workmanship was good and honest.

Did you try it yet? What fault codes did you find?
Ye, works great. Thanks for the heads up man.

Can't remember the code, but it was fuel mixture too rich. Did quite a bit of research, and nothing much to worry about - yet.
Next service at Auto Service Center I will get them to check it out.

It isn't a diesel by any chance?
Over rich mixture on some engines can mean leaky injector issues and that can cause catastrophic failure in some issues if left too long or if driven hard/for extended periods

Any recommendations for an Audi specialist in Durban ? I’m out of plan now and I would rather take it to a reliable private workshop than back to Audi for work to be done

Okay my GTI is making some seriously strange noises today that I cannot put my finger on.

It literally sounds like when we used to put cardboard between spokes on our bicycles when going through the lower revs in 1st, 2nd and I think 3rd gear. At first I thought it was a bike that riding behind me.

When I'm at speed and lower revs it's dead quiet as normal.

It's not an engine issue because you rev it in neutral and it's fine. So a hole in the exhaust I'm sure is out. .

What's even stranger is that I drove to my folks without a problem. Then it stood outside for an hour or so and made the noise on the way home.

Even stranger is that my wife (typical woman) chimes in and says oh it did this a few weeks ago but then stopped.

I bet tomorrow it's going to shut up again.

Based in the above I want to say it's a drivetrain issue but it sounds more like an "air" noise. You know like changing the pipes would alter exhaust note.

Earlier the week I got a low brake fluid warning and immediately topped it up. So if it wasn't that my wife said it did this a few weeks ago I would have said maybe I spilled some and it melted or affected something but even then I would expect it to complain while in neutral.

Bloody cars.

Does the noise go up with speed of car, or go up with each gear?

That’s what makes it weird.

It goes up from idle to about 3000rpm then goes quiet.

And only in the first few gears.

My initial thought was maybe clutch/flywheel but there is no weird power transfer issue, no changing gear issues.

There is nothing to feel. It’s just a noise.

My question sucked. I mean does the frequency of the noise match the speed of the car, or does the frequency of the noise follow the revs, ie: drop to lower frequency when changing gears?

It pretty much sounds like a second engine running along side my own, which is why I thought it was the bike behind me.

It sounds like a V-Twin almost for those few thousands revs at the bottom.

This morning it was quiet for the first few kilometres and then started up again.

Guess I’ll visit my mechanic on Tuesday.

Meh, opened the bonnet and though aha I was just paranoid the air filter cover had popped off and it does sound a bit like a wide open filter breather noise.

Put it back together and test drove it and thought that was it and then the ****ing noise was back.

To the mechanic I go.

Best of luck. If they can't fix it get the other GTI.

I am starting to think it might be a gearbox shaft bearing as that’s the closest thing I can find online.

But I’ll know soon enough I’m sure.

Always when that tax return comes back it finds a way to be spent.

Quite keen to see how this pans out and what turns out to be the problem. Really hope you can get to the bottom of it all.

That said, camp PSA has been wonderful to me thus far. New 308 GTI looks so good.
