The Audi Thread

I think 5W40 is perfect considering we are in a hot climate and that engine has a good few kms on it so will have a bit of wear.
The only drawback is very slightly worse fuel economy.

That's what I am thinking it might be safer given the temps we been seeing recently.

Fuel economy not a big worry as range always shows above 1000Km but i always fill up when around just below half tank - prefer to have the fuel pump fully submerged

Think i would go LiquiMoly Molygen 5W40 in the next change - I did a can of Liquimoly Ceratec in the last oil change so this time I think I will leave that out I think Molygen does need any extra additives

Mine is similar at 150k km's but I had it inspected last October and was told all is good. Two things to look out for are the oil/water heat exchanger in the V and injector seals, common issues on higher mileage 3.0 V6 TDi's.
I think my injector seals are going I see sweat around the injectors but its not alot - Its normally those copper washers

If I recall those bolts holding down the injectors are one time use only - so that will need to be changed as well

Lucky for me Oil and water temps are on par - coolant seems to be under 90 degrees when i plug in OBD i see it ranges from 85 to 87 degrees

Out of curiosity do you know who they inspected the chain? Its at the back of the engine and I think theres 3 chains - crank to each banks camshafts and one that runs the oil pump

Guy with a 3.0TDi engines - what oil are you using?

I was using Liquimoly 5W40 then changed to the VW/AUDI 507 which is the 5W30. The difference i noticed that the 5W30 got better fuel economy however i noticed that the oil heats up and cools down much quicker ( looking at temps via the lap timer) but the engine does feel louder.

I have done almost 7000Km on this oil, this is the time i like to change my oil. Thinking of going back to Liquimoly Molygen 5W40 specs of the car are:

DPF deleted - so low ash is not required
CAT Deleted
EGR Deleted
Stage 1

Thinking the 5W40 might give it a little more protection and we do live in a "hot" climate, Also modern engine have every strict tolerances

Would you go 5w30 or 5W40? I normally stick with a trusted brand oil and oil filters I use, are mainly a Bosch or Mann filter
I use vw507 5w30 wolf oil from goldwagen.

Oil temps range 80-100c. (A4/B8.5)

Mileage: 230k

Mine has had a random startup rattle since 160k. I would say 2 out of 10 times I hear the rattle. Doesn’t matter if it’s hot or cold.

I have the same, a huge rattle at start up for no more than 2 seconds max cold start and warm starts

Yep, copper washers, get eaten over time leading to basically blow by which if left for too long can cause severe damage. The kit isn't too expensive but it is quite a bit of labour to get to the injectors, get them out, new washers in and everything back together.

I am not actually sure, maybe just by ear, maybe checking timing, diagnostics, etc. It is a ball ache of a job to do, engine out.

I suspect maybe the DMF flywheel which gives me some peace of mind. One day when I'm bitcoin rich I will take engine out and do chains, , injector seals, DMF/Clutch Pack and DSG repair kit.

Hows that 3.0tdi in an A4 - in the A6 its stupid fast wonder in a lighter car how does it feel?
I have quattro too. It doesn't hang around, according to the app on my phone:
0-100: 5.5s
1/4 mile: 14s

ave fuel consumption 7l/100

I feel it can be faster after decarbon intake and clutch adaptation as this performance I had before DPF/EGR delete.

There are also rubber o rings on the injectors afaik.

Don't those have a hydraulic chain tensioner that needs oil pressure to build up before it can properly tension the chain?

Why random on hot and cold starts? Doesnt a new engine also need oil pressure to tension the chain? Are you implying a new engine has this rattle?

No idea but it would explain why it only rattles on start-up, and the random thing could be depending on how much residual oil pressure is retained in the tensioner

I can park the car for a week and it doesnt rattle on start up or I can go for a long drive and park it for an hour and then it will rattle on startup. Sometimes it rattles on cold start up. Like I said, completely random.
