The Audi Thread

Hi all.

The Mrs drives an Audi a4 2012 2.0tdi.

Took It in for the 75k km service today and had the following issues and not sure if it's a true response:

When I drive I always adjust the rear view mirror. When I do, the wipers go on. Technicians told my wife it's normal and the wipers are sensitive to vibrations. Its only done this since sometime between the 60k km service and this service - not before. Can the response from the techie be true?

Also, when turning the steering wheel a few rotations sometimes results in subtle volume increase in the sound system. Normal too?

Last question is on the maintenance plan. Can it be extended beyond R100k km and is it worth it? Wife drives about R120km a day so that contributes to the high mileage.

TIA

Can't say my wipers have ever come on except when it rains. Sounds like the rain sensor in the mirror shaft my not be stuck to the window firmly. Has the windscreen been replaced due to crack?

Do you have volume controls on the steering wheel?

Yes, windscreen was replaced sometime after the 60k km service. So it could be they didn't fit it correctly?

Yes, controls also on the steering wheel but I assure you no fingers, clothing our other body parts are brushing up against the volume dial....I made sure to check.

The windscreen should have been replaced with genuine Audi (it says Audi on it) windscreen that comes pre-fitted with sensors. If it was replaced with a 3rd party windscreen (Shatepruf, etc), you could have problems as then they take the sensor from the old windscreen and attach it to the new windscreen and this can cause issues.

Do you know what was fitted?

Does it occur when stationary and turning the steering wheel? Does the radio display show the change in volume?

TT is sorta in the middle of the 2-series and Z4. The lower end models compete with the 2-series. TT RS competes with Z4. In my opinion...

I think the problem is more with BMW's overlapping model structure, than with Audi not really having a specific model to compete with each of theirs. Strictly speaking, the TT and Z4 are more analogous due to them being proper 2+2 coupes, IMO. But that doesn't mean that the 2-Series doesn't compete with the lower TT models.

An audi smart watch to do with an audi shirt and an audi bag. Nope, wearing vehicle branded products just makes one look like a knob. Except for Jeep. They actually pulled it off.

My windscreen was replaced, but the geniuses didn't replace the "gel pad" which goes between the rain sensor and the windscreen glass. For this reason, the wipers don't work properly and sometimes the wipers activate when I adjust my mirror. So check that the "gel pad" is present. It is easy to see if it is missing. Look from the outside of the car at the rearview mirror, you will see a circular cavity in the "black painted part" of the windscreen behind the mirror. If the gel pad is missing, it looks hollow. The gel pad is about R150 from the dealer, but I need someone to fit it.

Then on the volume, yes, mine also clicks up a notch sometimes. I put this down to the fact that the volume knob on the steering wheel has "notches" when you turn it. So I guess sometimes the wheel wasn't quite on the next notch properly and falls back to the previous one, if that makes sense?

I am about to spend R20k on another year of freeway plan. The car is fine and I can't justify replacing it right now. Yes, it is very expensive, but anything that breaks will be more than R20k and it includes an annual service.

Glad you found the problem.

Did they replace with Audi or Shatterprufe windscreen?
