It's really stupid not a play on every date available. International coaches get very little time with players, so each date should be used. I know last year SAFA continually failed to play friendlies after the qualifier in FIFA weeks. This is the first time I know of a date being completely ignored though. I am relatively new to following football in such detail though.
 
The Under 20 side won 1-0 to advance to the next stage of qualifiers where they will play Nigeria for a place at next year's African Youth Championship.

Kickoff reports that Bafana have a friendly scheduled for 11 September with Mozambique in Nelspruit. No official word yet though.
 
Gordon is bringing an 18 year old into Bafana:

South African youngster Kgosi Ntlhe has been called up by Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund for the internationals against Brazil and Mozambique next month.

This was confirmed via a tweet by the press officer at his English Championship club, Peterborough United, and then retweeted by the player himself.

"Can now confirm that Kgosi Nthle has been called up to the South African senior squad for games against Brazil and Mozambique,” United press officer Phil Adlam said.

The 18-year-old left-back broke into the first team at Peterborough in the final two Championship games of last season, both substitute appearances.

However, he has started all the club's games so far in the current campaign and looks to be entrenched in the fullback position.

He is known to be highly rated by United manager Darren Ferguson, son of Manchester United legend Sir Alex.

Ntlhe played for the South African Under-20 side at the 8-Nations Tournament in Cape Town earlier this year and won rave reviews for his performances.

Should he make it onto the pitch in either game, he will be four months older than the youngest-ever Bafana international, Aaron Mokoena, who was 18 years, two months and 26 days when he played against Botswana in 1999.

Igesund is only due to formally announce his squad for the two matches on Thursday.

SAFA have a new sponsor:

The South Africa Football Association (SAFA) has entered into a three-year sponsorship deal with Energade. The sports energy drink will be supplied to all of SAFA’s national teams over the next three years, including the senior men’s team, Bafana Bafana.

Speaking to the media and invited guests at a launch ceremony held at The Venue in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg, on Tuesday morning, Tiger Brands CEO, Peter Matlare, said that they are delighted to align themselves with SAFA.



"Our brand will be with SAFA through-out the steps, starting from next year's Afcon. We want to be with the national team, not just Bafana, but all the teams under SAFA. We want to see the teams show that they are committed to working with the greatest energy drink. We are happy to have this relationship," Matlare concluded.

I think that he made a state,ent a few weeks ago, after talking to Igesund.

Really looking forward to seeing what Kgosi Ntlhe can do. He's 18 and we really need good left backs.

Dean Furman gets a recall 4 years after his first call up. Not sure if how good he is, but it's good to know that players who weren't brought the SA system are still watched.

Also, huge credit for dropping Teko and Killer, both have been out of form, and your name alone shouldn't get you into the team.

Changes to the squad:

ohannesburg - Bafana Bafana captain Steven Pienaar has withdrawn from a friendly against Brazil in Sao Paulo on Friday after pulling a thigh muscle playing for Everton at the weekend.

A national football association spokesperson said SuperSport United midfielder George Maluleka will replace Pienaar and coach Gordon Igesund wants to meet his squad before naming a stand-in skipper.

Another change to the 25-man squad sees Edward Manqele of Mamelodi Sundowns come in for veteran striker Siyabonga Nomvethe, who tore ligaments playing for Moroka Swallows.

It's a freaking friendly match in preparation for the real thing in 2014. I doubt that at 37 he will still be around let alone being the best. Have you seen the Michelin-Man rolls on the side of the guy?

Anyway he is no longer the best. He only scored seven goals in the league last season while top goal scorer scored something like 20 goals.
How about younger players like Eleazer Rogers, Jabu Manqele, Tokelo Rantie, Erwin Isaacs, Brad Grobbler. Might as well recall Shaun Bartlett as Bennie's strike partner just for old time sakes. :D

You don't see Brasil playing with fat Ronaldo, Rivaldo or Roberto Carlos...they have new superstars in Neymar, Hulk, Pato, Marcelo because they gave them a chance to play.

Gordon Igesund believes in the tried (tired) and tested. I don't think he'll give the young guys a chance.

I'm surprised Jali, Manyisa, Kekana, and Teko are not in the squad. I would have Jali + Kekana over Dikgacoi + Letsholonyane

well i wish playing as a striker was just about goals. but it isnt. benni contributed alot to pirates success last season. he has experience on all levels of competition. not alot of players here can say that. im just saying he can still make a contribution.

at the moment brazil is lacking a bit of experience..those guys arent superstars because they got a chance to play for brazil...they make their name before that...brazil just has a production line...i havent seen too many young players play for bafana...i believe some left back is coming through so thats good..but they rebuilding so its understandable. maybe they should call up

gordon usually takes the best available...or at least i hope safa allows him to pick his own team...but i hear u...there is some good youngsters coming up. it wouldnt be good to take all the youngsters and get a klap of 5 nil and then hand over the flame/trophy to brazil...

then again we might get thrashed with the experience as well........lets see what gordon comes up with...afterwards you can slate him if he gets it wrong...
 
New rankings:

South Africa have slipped to number 74 in the latest Fifa World Rankings released on Wednesday.

It is a drop of seven places for the national side which now leaves them placed as the 19th best side on the African continent.

Just last week Safa CEO Robin Peterson said the country’s target for the next 10 years was to "be in the top three in Africa and the top 20 in the world".

But that looks a long way off for coach Gordon Igesund now, who will have to steadily build his side’s ranking points.

The good news for him is that he will get plenty of opportunity to do so over the next six months, with Bafana having a packed programme of pre-Africa Cup of Nations matches, the tournament itself and then 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifiers in March.

While many people believe the Fifa Rankings are not worth the paper they are printed on, the reality is that they are important.

They are used to determine seedings for major championships and also play a role in the issuing of work permits in some European countries. South Africa’s lowly ranking would make it more difficult for its national team players to move in the future.

Ivory Coast have kept their place as the top-ranked African side, while Algeria have taken over second place from Ghana. Libya and Mali round out the top five, followed by Egypt, Tunisia, Gabon, Zambia and Sierra Leone.

Spain have maintained their healthy lead over second-placed Germany in the global list, with England in third, while the only change in the top 10 sees Portugal move into fourth at the expense of Uruguay.

The remainder of the top 10 is Italy, Argentina, Netherlands, Croatia and Denmark.

Again I have to ask, why did SAFA not schedule a friendly in August? There are precious few FIFA dates, and we can't afford to waste them!
 
Ok people the match is tonight, 8.45 SA time. SABC1 will broadcast the match, with coverage starting at 8.30. Anyone care to make a prediction?

Yes, it always looks washed out, and is only broadcast in 4:3, and the English and Zulu commentators switch every 10 minutes, but it's still Bafana. I'll watch my team even if it's black and white.
