The Banting/LCHF Thread

I tried it when I saw it at the top of r/keto. It was insanely good!! Topped with chicken, blue cheese , and mushroom. So good that I ate theentire thing, and felt slightly sick.

Awesome. I only recently started enjoying small amounts of blue cheese in salads or on open burgers. Very overpowering if your hand slips a bit.

Will give it a try on the pizza.

Where in Cape Town can I get fresh almonds/macadmias at a decent price? Looking to buy 10-15 kg.
I've tried the ones from PnP and Checkers, but was greatly disappointed in quality and price (R250-300/kg).
Someone recommended I try Teddy's in Athlone. Price and quality were also off.

A kg of nuts is gonna cost you.
Komati foods quality is usually quite good and their prices aren't bad (cheaper than Wellness Warehouse).

Was just at Food Lovers Market, almonds are R299.99 a kilo. Sad, 'cause something like 6 months ago they were on special for half that price. That was before the drought in California got worse and the USD/ZAR tanked. I wonder what % of locally available almonds are imported versus grown here?

On a happier note, macadamias are R189.90/kg.

I suspect close to 0% unless you find a small batch at a farm stall. Old article but I doubt much has changed:
“The only tree nuts produced on a commercial scale in South Africa are pecan and macadamia nuts....

He adds that the Western Cape climate is ideal for almond production. “The largest almond farm in South Africa is in Montagu but its 80t annual production is not nearly enough to meet our demand. We still import more than 200t almonds every year.”

Even Montagu almonds are imported:

beware of peanuts. Starchy - legumes not true nuts.

Anybody know where I can find regular or light olive oil.

Everybody is so caught up in this whole extra virgin thing.

I want to make my own mayo with a mixture of coconut and olive oil. Extra Virgin taste is not neutral enough for this.

I made it just the other day with extra virgin. Add in lemon for a tangy flavour and some extra Greek yoghurt, and a pinch of guar gum if it thins out. Delicious.

I'll have to try a different brand though. Because our EV Olive Oil has a very strong taste. Nice over salads but not so nice in a mayo.

Does this qualify?

I'll give that a try, thanks.
