The Banting/LCHF Thread

The Clover Mooi river butter is pretty good. Kerrygold does taste better but the price tag doesn't justify the purchase.

Lately most of the butter is very expensive obviously. Most clover butter (and I actually don't see it in stock often) is above R60 at least. Hell SPAR charges R67 for their "home brand" butter currently.

Made some lowcarb onion rings today

Nom nom nom nom

EU warning of butter shortages by Xmas. No doubt we will be affected since we import most of our butter from EU
Some of reasons given for shortage is more people consuming butter due to Banting type diets...
Clover is a premium SA butter BUT check the label because Clover has in the years past had butter from New Zealand
(Inferior tasting if you are used to SA mooi River!) and in clover packaging with "product of New Zealand " in fine print on back
Clover did this in 2009 or thereabouts QUIETLY and when called out said that SA milk did not at that time have the sufficient cream content.
Now with our drought it's important to check packaging on product origin.
Emerald brand butter in pnp is a uk product from Northern Ireland and Kerrygold is the Republic of Ireland's product
Lurpack is Denmark
Unfortunately we can't get some of the worlds finest butter which is a great pity. That would be French butter
From Normandy.
Then again if you can get decent cream and good salt and you own an industrial type blender eg vitamix
You can whip up your very own butter.

I don't understand the logic. SA milk has insufficient cream content? Why is this?

So if there not good cream for clover to make butter then how are you going to find the cream to make it yourself.

We've already seen this. It's hard getting hold of even Clover these days. I bought some other brand (which I can't remember the name of) which is currently doing the job for me.

Yes I think it will end with catastrophe. Cats and dogs living together, that sort of thing.

I don't think cats and dogs will become a problem, but if you eat all the fat you will just clog up in the end and sit with all the related problems.

It truly is a terrible food fetish, look at all the pigs who cry every day.

I do not know if and why the pigs are crying, but humans should not eat like pigs if the pig-diet will make them cry later in their lives.

Yup. I just came from Spar and thir no-name brand butter is R60.99

It was on sale 2 months back for R37.

I used to know a boerseun who sold cream in Hillcrest from his small dairy farm. Bloody hell that was fecken thick and yellow... wonder if he still sells.

Would be nice to make some good butter.
