The Banting/LCHF Thread

First, a question: I started banting on the 2nd of February (last Monday) and to date I've lost 3 1/5 kilos. Is that normal given everyone's experiences here?

Second, I think the problem with banting and what gets everyone worried is the high fat part of it. I think there needs to be a differentiation between trans and saturated "bad" fats and good fats. Eg you cannot compare a cupcake with an avocado, although both are high in fat. Bad fats are what will kill you, whereas good fats have been consumed by humans for centuries.

Also, everything is about moderation. If you are going to pig out on fat - or anything for that matter - it won't be good for you. The key is to do everything in moderation. Eg if I am going to be eating cheese (fat) today in my salad, I won't be cooking my chicken breast (protein) in butter but in 0 calorie, 0 carb Spray & Cook instead.

Third, the one thing I disagree with Noakes on is his stance regarding fruit. His diet would have you eating fruit scarcely, if at all. Like is the case with fats, not all carbs are bad. The carbs in eg a banana are good carbs. Fruit, even if it has some carbs, is overwhelmingly full of other nutrients that is good for your body and general well-being. I think eating fruit is important to overall health but again, as the general rule goes, everything in moderation.

Maybe you should write your own nutrition books. But then again you're just regurgitating the usual anti low carb crap, to be honest. You're seeing good results and still questioning the science based on your opinions?

Sorry but I'm sick of the disinformation now. Don't take this personally.

Yes

you still need to understand fats

wrong

wrong again - you fail to understand fructose metabolism

here endeth the lesson

Well that got unnecessarily aggressive quickly. . .

I am eating low carb - less than 25g a day. I've never disagreed with low carb. But that doesn't mean I unquestioningly accept everything I'm told by one man - I'm allowed to do my own independent research, and even the great Noakes is not above questioning.

Maybe you should learn how to have a civilised conversation, or else keep your opinions to yourself.

And as you say: don't take this personally.

If you did any reasonable research you'd know that this is not one man's theory. Noakes is just standing on the shoulders of giants.

you make the same mistake as many others and think this whole thing is just Noakes, Noakes is late on the scene, although early for South Africa

Noakes himself has said his diet is very similar to Atkins, only Atkins allows for the eating of legumes, fruit and artificial sweeteners (in Phase 2). Atkins has been around since the 70s.

Very very limited fruit, and completely optional.
The idea that fruit is necessary, even good for you, is completely misguided propaganda intended to bolster agricultural industry in the states.

Actually there are multiple scientific tests that show fruit is good for you. One of the newest is the scientific trials that have found a link between the consumption of berries and the preservation of memory/mental agility while aging.

Banting is what it's based on mostly (pre-atkins).

No man, you don't seriously believe that?

Berries are a special case. Fruit in general is not good for you. Far too much sugar.

this crap again, I remember trying to watch it last year and gave up cause there was just so much garbage in the thing, full of bad science as I recall

What about the catabolic effects of low carb?
Of the 4kg the LCHF dieter lost - 2kg was muscle IIRC.
