The Banting/LCHF Thread

Hi all, my first post on this thred, I spent the past couple days reading through the entire thred from the start.
I have around 30 -40 kg to lose, last year around October I decided to try the banting thing. I started by doing everything near perfect except I continued drinking beer, only Castle Light but with year end functions etc, I drank a few almost every day and over weekends brandy and coke.
Turns out this didn't work at all, I lost nothing as in not even 10g and gave it up after about 2 months. Luckally I fully realized that I'm not losing because of the alcohol and decided to give it another shot this year.

I started again this past Monday and I'm more dedicated than ever, I did however cheat a little this past week to get rid of all the evil stuff in the house, but decided from tomorrow I'm 100% in and will be very strickt with what I consume.
This past week I cheated by eating a entire watermelon, I had 2 slices of pizza, a entire packet of biscuits with my coffee, some slap chips with my stake the other day and I had a couple of good craft beers. Though I cheated, I still lost 1.8 kg for the week, so there's my motivation already.

Part of my plan is no alcohol as in not a drop for at least the first month, there after I'll maybe have 2 Castle Lights or a Whiskey as a treat from time to time.
Through this thred I saw that a lot of you are struggling with pasta and bread, luckally I have never been a lover of bread and pasta, in the past I whent for weeks, even months without bread and pasta without missing it at all, bar the odd garlic bred or braaibroodjie with a braai.
Luckally I also don't have a sweet tooth at all, I have been drinking coffee without sugar for years, so won't even need sweetner to make coffee/tea drinkable.

P.S. For those of you who struggle to drink 2 - 2.5L of water per day, try infusing your water with some fruit, vedge or hurbs. Basically what I do is take a 5L bottle, chuck in a couple slices lemon, some mint leaves, some cucumber and maybe a slice of orange then fill it up with water and cool in the fridge. I don't have a problem with drinking plain water, but water this way tastes even better and goes down easier.
P.P.S. By the recommendation on this thred I had my first meatza Friday night and it was awesome, I can see that happening at least once a week though I will also try the cauli pizza base as recommended.

I didn't share at the time because I was grumpy and distraught: I put on 7kg's over xmas - I decided to enjoy myself after having banted through xmas 2014 and not gaining a gram. Well, I regretted that decision on Monday 4/01/2016 when I stepped on the scale but I already knew as shirts and pants had become tight...

Well, last Monday I stepped on the scale and had lost 4kg's in a week - strict banting with no additional exercise other than my manic day job (8000 steps a day).

This morning down another 2kg's to give me 6 down in 2 weeks :) I will prob ease off the strictness and reintroduce banting bread again as I miss it a lot and have done most of the hard work....

Glad to be back to normal again. Won't go back to sugar and carbs again this year.

What is the verdict on Corn?

Like the whole kernels in a can.

I know corn is under the red list but it is listed as baked goods.

Thinking along the line of a handful of canned kernels with a salad or a can in a soup.

Should really be avoided but I use a little every now and then. Balance it out if you can or spread it amongst large qty.

Personally I'll be avoiding corn in any way, shape or form, but then again I'm attempting to go uber strict and by the letter. But I guess it also depends on where you are in terms of weight loss and goals.

Just went and did my cholesterol test and it was 7.3 :(
Don't stress, read Dr Peter Attia's Truth about Cholesterol blog posts so that you get a better understanding of the science of cholesterol and not the dogma crap we've been lead to believe

Dont get me wrong. I know cholesterol means ****all nowadays. Its just that I wont get points now ..

Lol, just woke up two ladies in the kitchen moaning at each other about low fat milk. Took a box of full cream and a box of low fat, showed them the nutrition values: Full Cream carbs 10g , Low fat carbs 12g, both of which majority sugars. Lets just say now they're drinking full cream :p

I take my coffee black at the moment now or on special occasions with cream if I feel like it.

You should not be working on total carbs. You should be looking at net carbs.

Net carbs = total carbs - fibre.

Maize is still a no no tho :p

Not entirely true since your gut can ferment some fiber into usable energy. So, you can't subtract all fiber.

Safest thing to do is use total carbs including fiber, but bear in mind you still need a lot of fiber. I'd probably say something like 15g of fiber per 1000 calories of food.

That's weird, my cholesterol dropped to 3.7 last time it was measured.

The only thing since thats changed since my last visit is that I increased my protein intake a lot.

Havent lost weight due to low carb diet in 7 months.

Worst thing after was going to speak to a Dietitian and listen to the nonsense she said.
