The Banting/LCHF Thread

I like putting the curry/chili on shredded cabbage

True, thats also a great base, had some butter chicken like that last night, deeeeeelish.

I think I am not getting enough roughage. What is a good source of roughage on a banting diet?

My wife bakes these cookies, I call them bootlax cookies. Made from coconut flour primarily but quite a bit of xylitol for something that size. Have three with coffee and it sorts you right out. I'll ask her for the recipe.

Also , drink lots and lots of water. This is normal for any person but I found with LCHF, I consume anything between 3-5l a day ( including coffee )

Sounds delicious!

Also, how much of the carb content of sugar alcohols must one count towards carbs taken in the day? eg maltitol in sugar free gums

Ah, this is probably RAS but wife is setting up a home industry bakery and most forumites know me and what I've lost. She's also doing a Low carb section. Feel free to have a look, we're working on more community and word of mouth at the moment and its a side hobby going small business maybe. Also some pics of the low carb goodies I get to eat :D

Earlier in the thread somewhere, I saw people post pics of lindt dark chocolates. I checked in store and none of the Lindt chocolate have calorie values. Are dark chocolates like that banting safe?

85% and 90% cocoa yes, in limited amounts. Do a carb search for it.

90% is lower carb but 85% for me is nicer. Also values are for 100g which is a slab. Limit yourself to two squares and your fine, even for keto. In theory a slab is fine for normal Low Carbers.

Yeah its not so straight forward. Best habit to get into is reading the ingredients of everything you buy. Unfortunately you'll quickly realize sugar is present in almost everything. Everyone's eating bacon, but almost all "commercial" ones include sugar whether it's Eskort, Enterprise, PnP, Woolies ect. Other day I was braaing a few nice lamb chops and boom, the chop spice has sugar to grrr.

Here's a basic mayo.

Banting Mayo

Almost all the mayonnaises you get in the stores are made with veg oils,
which are against Banting religion. Stay away from
all of them and make your own safe and delicious mayo. You can add anything
to it just like a normal mayo so go wild with flavour combinations.

1 whole egg
2 egg yolks
1 tbsp dijon mustard
juice of 1 lemon
½ cup coconut oil, extra-virgin or refined
½ cup quality olive oil
1 tbsp double thick greek yoghurt
salt and pepper

1/ Combine the eggs, mustard and lemon juice in a food processor.
2/ Melt the coconut oil in a small pot until it turns to liquid.
Avoid heating it too much or it will cause the eggs to curdle.
3/ Turn the food processor to a fast speed and slowly pour the
coconut oil and olive oil into the egg mixture.
4/ Once the mayo has emulsified, add the yoghurt and season to taste.

This should keep for about a week in the fridge.
Note: If you bulk this up with yoghurt you can make it go a lot further.
Coconut oil is outrageously expensive so it needs to be stretched as far as possible.

MAKES 400ML

I made this yesterday, but mine came out tasting too olive oily. Maybe I did something wrong. Also it is runnier than store bought mayo. How to get it a little thicker?

I don't see the benefit of making my own mayo, in general mayo isn't too high (depending on how much you use), but found miracle whip (new on sa market) to be quite low

Get a nice fatty mayo and you normally good. I tend to avoid heavily labeled Banting products in stores.

I make a very simple mayo. I don't make it or use it often because I don't actually like mayo. Because of that, I don't mind that it contains seed oils like vegetable oil. Vegetable oil isn't great for you, but I don't eat enough of it for it to matter.

Crack an egg into a stick blender beaker
Add a pinch of salt
Add a teaspoon of mustard
Add two teaspoons of lemon juice
Add one cup of oil - I use a mix of olive oil and vegetable oil

Put the stick blender in the beaker and push it all the way to the bottom without turning it on. When it is at the bottom, turn it on and pull it slowly to the top. Et voila, mayonnaise. Simple and foolproof and yes it will be thick. One whole egg, you don't need just yolks for this.

I wouldn't use coconut oil in this because it is a solid at room temperature. You could use avocado oil instead I suppose. Olive oil is supposedly too strongly flavoured to be used on its own in mayonnaise.

Why would you ever add yogurt to a mayonnaise????
