I'm looking to start a site for my Media Centre I've been coding :p

I need a few things:
- a .com Domain & overseas hosting
- cPanel
- I would like to pay for the hosting through paypal
- Ease of Setup - I want to register the domain and host the site with a single company.

Now I see bluehost gives you a domain forever, as long as you stay with them, and I heard they are quite good....but are there any other ones that are better?

Hi. I have had good results with Hetzner. They are South African so you won't need paypal. They have a German server option.

Steer clear of Godaddy. They are ok for domain registration, but hosting is aweful!

Bluehost is good, but becareful if your site get's popular. I've had sites shutdown and databases turned off for "excessive use of resources" and then they pretty much force you to buy a bigger package.

Best bet is to go for Hostgator and get a VPS account straight off the bat.

yeah i'm not using godaddy or any south african hosting company thanx....

it's either Bluehost or Hostgator it seems.

what would I need VPS for though?

First off, if you're asking what VPS is, this plan is not for you (no offence - just saying; you'll need to know how to set up and manage a server and how to deal with your own support issues)

You don't need to buy a car rental company if all you want to do is rent a car.

VPS = Virtual Private Hosting whereby a dedicated server is divided up in portions. You could start your own hosting company by either opting for a VPS or a dedicated server.

I wouldn't recommend VPS for my own site or to use it for hosting - generally you're looking at getting a virtual server with 512mb or 1gig of ram and the performance is shocking - not to mention that servers are usually unstable.

Exactly supmansa, Why would I need VPS if all I want is a basic site with a Forum? I'm not looking to build a Search Engine Data Centre, just a website.

As for the last line you said, I'm getting what you are trying to say here?
You recommend I get a Virtual Server but it sucks and is unstable?

Texo / BlueHost
Number of domains: 1 / Unlimited Domain Hosting
Diskspace: 2 GB / Unlimited GB Hosting Space
Data transfer: 16GB / Unlimited GB File Transfer
R40 monthly / R35 month

yeah I dunno guys.... plus with bluehost I never having to re-register & pay for my Domain name again..

I'm using gridhost they seem pretty good.

Those people almost black listed me over R24 because i couldn't pay them due to their weird payment system which wasn't working properly
You have to pay into some weird account then transfer the credits from there. When i asked them for help, i could not get a hold of someone to explain why i'm not paying.
And ended up paying the guy who manages the accounts via EFT which he made clear to me "Its not allowed"

Maybe its just a once of bad experience with them, but i don't think their support is very good. (Seems like a very small company)

Another +1 for hostgator. I've moved around a bit and I'm very happy with them!
Everything "just works" so I haven't needed support a lot but they handle it pretty well. I think hostgator is a big enough company with enough sites they have have sorted out 99% of the "niggles".

I think so as well, truly legends of the game

Yeah, they claim to host 1% - 2% of the entire internet and that's plenty fraggin' HUGE.

There still quite a few complaints about them popping up from time to time, but this is more due to customers falling through the cracks in a huge system and making enough noise should get you sorted out.

This is a much better situation to be in than hosting with some pisswilly cheapie company that doesn't have the staff, know how or resources to help you even if they wanted to.
