Thanks guys, i'll take a look at hostgator as well.
 
+1 for hostgator

Basic package gives you unlimited space + data + subdomains + ftp + emails + etc
The next one up adds unlimited domains to that

For something silly like $7 /month

You could try Lusion Technologies, packages for the hosting are at http://www.lusion.co.za/web-hosting , they are a South African company, host internationally with domain registration included and have free support. cPanel included.

Also I would say you can try anthosting.co.za for local hosting and hostgator.com for abroad

I also use hetzner. Their email is very reliable, use it every day for a few years now, and have never had a problem.

Also the website works very well. I had the site moved to germany, as the bandwidth there is much cheaper.

If you havent got hosting yet you might want to try Hub Host. I know we are a South African company but our servers are in the US.

Check the hosting company's Terms of Service: there will probably be a note about what "unlimited" really means.

BlueHost "unlimited" plans are limited to 50,000 inodes. HostGator has an inodes limit of 250,000, 5 times more than BlueHost. You can see HostGator is much more generous than BlueHost. Of course, they are also more expensive, so it comes back to "what you pay is what you get".

thanx for the link, interesting. I think i'm going for hostgator over bluehost then.

i'm sure 2GB storage is more than i'll need and i'm sure I won't transfer over 16GB/month, but I'll just sleep better at night knowing it's "unlimited".

yes, even if it's not "truly unlimited", it's still much more than 2GB.

but yeah, I get what you are saying.

I also see you don't support paypal - not a biggie, but....do I have to pay for my domain name over and over again?

..only one domain allowed and payment for 3 years upfront!

But everyone should make the choice that suits them best. As a web-developer I simply offer this to my clients, since SA'n hosting companies are ripping people off. For those who are interested, we can always construct individual packages and payment arrangements.

For $120 (far < R1200) you get unlimited* domains, unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth) for a year. They also have that same one on monthly at $10/month. (< R100)

* UNLIMITED: see above.

We went with hostgator. The package looked great. But now they are asking for a copy of one's id & photocopy of credit card. What's up with that? This is the first time I've come across something like that. I'm looking to cancel my plan now as that's a huge personal security risk.
