The biggest permanent LAN - PTAWUG

Something that cannot be stressed enough, is that the biggest advantage to being connected to the WUG is that it's totally community run and funded, so if there's a need for something, more speed, more space, more animated flash intros etc. *you* and like minded wuggers can make it happen (there are quite a number of members who are willing to assist with technical ability where required), without having to go through the hassle of begging telkom / iburst vodacom / mtn / [insert crappy service provider here] technicians to give you a stable connection (assuming you can get through to them in the first place) or spending tons of money on server hosting just so that some 14 year old camper from korea can pwn you (let some local 14 year old do that instead for free :))!

Disclaimer:
all animated flash intros are property of the wug member, the wug community as a whole accepts no liability from loss of hearing, sight or any of the other senses due to overindulgence in flash introductory presentations.

562?! Zee cult is growing ---insert evil laugh---. No seriously guys, the WUG is the way to go, been on it for roughly 7 months now and even though I'm not even half as involved as I should be I can honestly say it was a good investment! The content is ever growing, the guys on IRC are awesome (and thats not even mentioning the awesomeness which is Frikkie..should meet him ;) ).
There simply isnt a better way to spend two grand (or whatever a kit cost these days).

I would love to join the WUG (the one in jhb).
but i don't want to pay R1600 without being 100% sure i can get a signal....tried on the forms and on the site...but no one can help with a testing equipment...so i gave up :-(

Edit: I stay in fouways/lonehill... if anyone could help, i would highly appreciate it.

I have noticed that there is quite little support on this.
what you can do is using the kml file personally go to the highsites that you have LOS with.
Just so you can get a better understanding for where it is.
THen get on your roof and see if you can spot that location.
if so then you should have signal.

btw this is only hearsay as i still need to sort my things out and connect myself.
and a shameless way to subscribe to this thread.

The problem is, because i live in a townhouse, i don't have access to the roof!

if you don't have access to the roof, how are you going to put up and align an antenna in anycase?
why don't you have access to the roof, do you stay in a bottom unit?

What is the average transfer speed one can expect on the wug?

it depends on your connection - signal and quality, the amount of users on your sector, the backbones of your highsite. Anything between 50kb/sec and 1.5mb/sec

Thanks, are there any gaming servers?

I will hopefully be joining the PTAWUG shortly. Need to get home (on Friday) and check if i have LOS.

I will be connecting to this one... Die Wilgers DW
6m Steel tower on the top of the Bronberg above the Faerie Glen Pick 'n' Pay if looking from the South and about 600m west of the Wilgers hospital if looking from the North.

I live behind the KFC next to the P&P so i should be able to spot it.

Is there still many a members on the WUG? Still going strong or fizzled a bit?

Die Wilgers is full, as indicated on the KMZ file.
We need another location on the mountain to put up a tower.

WUG is still growing strong
