i think you've got some serious misconceptions about wugs.

Remember, to join one of these networks you'd need 50 years of experience with wireless technology and routers, not to mention security checked and prodded for your login details...

I dunno how they do things in Cape Town, but in JHB/PTA a brick could join, without being confused! :D

:D sure as hell confused me 4 years ago ... the issue I have is I can't use my wireless connected laptop. Now THAT would be nice

remember, this is not indoor wifi, coffeeshop hotspot type network. It's a proper, high-bandwith long range network. IF laptops could work to connect to the wug, we would have recommended it (it will work if you live next to a highsite).
One has to use what works, not what will be nice.

i did manage to connect a grid antenna with lmr cable and a pigtail to my notebooks internal wifi, but you have to remove some panels for it, the dedicated router is a lot better :P

we do have a few bricks on the network.... but the rest of the people are very active in contributing funds, labour, "intelligence" etc

Guys I live in the centurion area. I have the equipment but I want to sell it.
What I have is a 2.4Ghz and a 5.8G Ghz Antenna, Mikrotik Router board running O/S version 3.9 ( I think ) plus got all the needed brackets , poles, wallmounts etc.

If anyone is intrested /pm me and make me a offer. I think Miro sells starter kits at R1800-R2000.

Stiletto were you connected to PTAWUG ?
What routerboard is it ? RB411 or RB433 ?
What antennas, grids, panels, omnis, yagis ? Dbi of the antennas ?

I dunno all those specs , sry.

But what I can tell you is that I used it for WISP's. The high site that I used to connect to was in Lauduim. Aprox. 8/9Km from where I live.

The 2.4Ghz they put up could connect to this Lauduim site easily.

I payed just over R3000 for my kit excl. installation.

If you guys want I could try and find out exactly what the specs are?

take pictures of the kit and upload here, I will tell you what it is.
There's a R450 difference between a routerboard 433 and a 411 for example.

What I can tell you is that when I bought it the guys said I would need a stronger "card" to get to their highsite.

I will upload photos later today.
