@Gory one thing to consider when you trade international exchanges vs local. With local exchanges you're trading the Rand against the various cryptos. With international exchanges you usually trade BTC (or ETH or USDT) against the various cryptos. What that means is that when you close a position, you end up back at BTC (or ETH or USDT) with international exchanges vs Rand with a local exchange. That can be good or bad - e.g. if BTC is tanking, it may look good on paper at an international exchange, but relative to the R, you might be making a loss when it looks like a gain... it depends on what's important to you right now - cash or crypto. Similarly, a nice R gain on an ETH trade using a local exchange may not be as good when BTC is doing well and the Rand is tanking... in that case trading on the international exchange may be better. In the long term, let's just assume the R will not outperform Crypto in general.

If exchange gets hacked, or makes a runner/shuts down... you're humped

Didn't consider that. So the safer thing is to transfer the coin to a personal wallet?
Doesn't that involve a hefty fee with bitcoin at the moment?

Keep your daily trading stuff online, the rest long term hodl stuff, take offline, off machine, make a few copies of keys, store in safe, draw a map, bury keys at x, brick up in wall etc etc etc ;)

I bought mine from cryptovault.co.za, was around 1385 incl shipping. But I see they increased their pricing now.
I prefer electrum. Free software wallet and you get to export the private keys.

Not sure which is more secure.
In the end none of your wallet apps or hardware devices hold your coins, they only hold your private keys. I wouldn't say a ledger is more secure, it uses a chrome app to access it. Sure, you need to use a pin on the actual device to let the chrome app interact with it. You can also use it without the chrome app, but it's quite a painful experience without it. And right at this moment there is a fake ledger app on the Google chrome store for the ledger :/

To be honest, I switched away to a wallet on my phone. I had multiple issues with the ledger. The biggest issue I had which scared me was importing my key into another app and it showed a 0 BTC balance. I tried multiple apps that supported the 24 word option. I used the HD (Hierarchical Deterministic architecture) option on the ledger which created a new address for each transaction. Seriously, none of the other apps would work.

The second issue I had was that I couldn't see all the addresses I used. The app does not keep it in a log. You have to use some 3rd party site that connects to your ledger and pulls your extended key. You can then view all the addresses. This never worked for me. So I'm unable to see if I have any coins from forks.

The 3rd issue was with XRP. It would constantly report a different balance.

Coming back to the security. I don't see this device being anymore secure than any well known wallet app on your phone. All decent apps can be set to use a pin or fingerprint to unlock in order to interact with it. I do believe that a wallet app is more secure on a phone though as I think a pc is an easier target for Ransom ware and whatnot.

What I usually do is create an address. Export the key, delete the app. Install a few different apps and import the wallet to see if it works. Then move a small a mount to it and do the steps again. If all works I move whatever I want to hodl long term to it and unsinstall all wallet apps. If you're going to hodl long-term, no need to have the app installed. Install it and import your key when you want to move your BTC out. Keep your private keys or phrase in a secure place. I keep mine in 4 different places, split up.

Long story short, I'm not using my ledger anymore. Support is horrible and it's not perfect. I didn't feel in control while using it. Read on Reddit and decide if you want one.

Happy hodling.

This is where some sort of consumer protection regulations on exchanges would be usefull. Because at the end of the day it's the most efficient/easiest to just store it on a exchange

Remember MtGox.

However apparently Kraken is making some headway in finding the missing 650 000 bitcoins...

Luno resistance at 180 000 soon. I think compared to dollar average BTC value it will breach and drop more. I bought in close to 180k. mark

The ZAR has also strengthened quite a bit vs the USD lately. Sitting at R12.38 now.

bought in at 190 so already feeling miffed, how long will this decline go on and were we stupid to buy this high? always that little fear in the back of your head that btc is returning to its original value before the massive spike started
