The Blu-ray blues

um, external 2.5" hard drives? Ever heard of them? Same size as a DVD and don't require any extra power. Flash Disks? Very new technology. You should Google them. Now come in 32 Gb size. Amazing what you can find on the net.
Will you give them away ? Like when your friend asks you for a copy of "something in the range of 30gb" would you pop it on a 32gb flash drive and give it away ?

If you would then lets have a beer sometime and become friends :D

No, I would either share it with him using my local Torrents. Or put it on 6 DVDs (as I currently do), or carry my portable hard drive or Flash disk over there and download it to his comp.

Dude. People have been sharing stuff on their computers for thousands of years :p Why does Blu-Ray suddenly have to be the ONLY way to share stuff?

I have several friends who regularly come over to my house and we exchange hundreds of Gigs a week. Do you think if I had a stack of BD discs I would burn one and GIVE it to them? Eff that. I tell them I even want my DVDs back when they are done with them.

Give it up for a loss Bro. You are banging a broken drum here.

what are you giving away in any event that is greater than 4GB or can't fit in a couple of DVDs?

um... a couple of DVDs. Duh. How do you think we do it now?

And how many files have you come across in the last year that won't fit on a DVD?

Hard drives, Flash Disks. swap and return. Download and run. Come on guys. I think you are smarter than that. ;)

told u so from the start..see I know everything :P

Never underestimate the determination of snotty nosed High Schoolers determined on sharing their entire Pr0n collection, ISO's of games and AVIs of ripped movies. ;)

Within a month that same collection will exist on multiples of computers! :p

And all done without the blossoming blue light of Blu-Ray!

Now can we quit all this crap about Blu-Ray storage plz?

If you are happy with the size of DVDs, good luck for you.
I am not and BD-R would be a step in the right direction.

You do see my point agrees with yours right?

Yes, sorry. Was just taking it a bit further! ;)

@ Rouxenator. hey Bro, if you have the money, then by all means. But not all of us have that kind of cash. I think I should be the one trying to become YOUR friend. If I had it I would use it. But not at this price. ;)

good point you raise. it doesn't help if you are the only one with a BD device as no-one else will be able to read the data you are sharing

Unfortunately I do not have the money for BluRay.

But hopefully the price will come down or something better will come along. Fact of the matter is optical storage is here to stay, it just needs to pull up its socks and get back in the game in terms of capacity.

hehe... today is MY day to disagree with you.

Optical Storage, yes... in terms of holography and greater density. We may still see more technology there in the coming years, but they will come fast and Blu-Ray's usable shelf life will not be that long.

BUT, the real growth is in Solid State Storage! The less movable parts the better/cheaper/longer life.

I think solid state will probably eventually kill optical storage. Probably within ten years.

Interesting to note that entry level professional HD video formats, both Panasonic's DVC Pro HD and Sony's XDCAM HD, use solid state media, P2 and SxS for recording in the entry and midlevel cameras, but high end use BluRay storage.

Actually we agree on a lot more than you think. I also believe in solid state drives. Have a few PCs running solid state only and it is rather sweet. Especially if you use nice storage cards like the Ultra range from Sandisk. CF is really a nice flash format for DIY solid state drives.

solid state is the future, more energy efficient, faster, will require less hardware to run (which is good from a manufacturing side of things). But there will be issues with this as well..but to me it just makes sense that solid state is the future..surprised it hasn't been implemented ages ago

...but just for a minute... lets consider buying or hiring movies.

Would you rather get a DVD, Blu-Ray or SD card?

What difference does that make?

Right now... if I had a Blu-Ray player... I would rent those (if the rental was reasonable).

In the future... the HD content will come on SD. Just plug the chip into your media center and A for Away.

Are the BD players multizone? in the stores here or does it depend on the manufacturer.

most of the dvd players were zoned, but pressing a few keys they can become multi zone i am sure the blue ones work the same
