The Blu-ray blues

To the rental company SD whould make sense, cause it cant get scratched, and can take quite some punishment

If we want to peer that far into the future (where movies are rented out on SD) we're probably at a point where movies will rather be distributed via broadband.

And before the expected replies, note I said in the "future". :)

Video stores (nothing more than a 'physical' distribution system) will disappear over time, killed off by more efficient distribution systems. Just like the video stores themselves contributed to the demise of earlier distribution systems like drive-ins.

Team America:
Kim: Now you see, the new world is... inevitable.
Lisa: ...It's what?
Kim: Inevit- inevitable.
Lisa: One more time.
Kim: [turns to her in fury] INEVITABLE. [turns around] Things are inevitably going to change! Goddamnit, open your ****in' ears!

So is there a hack for these BD players that are zone locked.?

There is a hack, that is the manufacturer included this 'hack' and will actually reveal it to you when you call them BUT its only for the DVD component of the BD player. There are no known key combinations to change the regions
on Bluray players for Blurays.

that would be a shame, cause still quite fond of the whole rental thing. Just so simple popping into our local video shop after having made a turn a the supermarket. :(

Yes, just like going to the drive-in used to be a great experience. At least for those of us who can still remember what a drive-in was.

:D then the portable hard drive takes a knock and you go "I wish I could remember the last time I used my DVD writer".

A possible scenario, but same could be said about optical media..cause dvd's can scratch /break heck even melt (hey not impossible)...all comes down to how u look after your stuff. and use my memory stick for smaller files (under 4gig), my old 40gig portable(notebook hard drive in an enclosure for bigger files) and have newly aquired 500gig I use for backups (never leaves cupboard for any other reason than backing up my critical goodies)

Optical as a backup medium let me down to often. I recently rechecked backups I made to DVD two years before and about 30% of the files were corrupted. Seems the DVD's perish over time. I've read a number of reports about it and this seems to confirm it.

Because the cost/Gig is so low now, I have a number of on-line drives where I backup my data. I keep at least 4 copies of critical data, all on drives.

I also have an external 1.5TB drive to move data around. If someone needs something I'll put it on the drive or memory stick and send it that way.

Optical as a backup medium is just too slow, small and not reliable. I'm sure it'll change, at least hope so.

How many of you backup your essential stuff off-site?
This can be a neighbour or better a family member in another city or
country.
