Sony still on offensive in tough times
27 October 2008 at 09h54

Sony chairperson Howard Stringer said on Monday the electronics giant was keeping up its long-term global ambitions despite taking a "very, very strong" hit in the global financial crisis.

The iconic Japanese firm last week slashed its net profit forecast for the year to March by more than half, blaming a soaring yen, intense competition and a global financial crisis that has sapped demand.

"We are a very strong, export business in Japan. Most of our business comes from exports, over 80 percent," Stringer, Sony's first foreign chief, told a business forum in Tokyo.

"So the impact on us is always going to be very, very strong. There is no hiding that," he said. .....

Translation.... the ship is sinking! :D

its good prices are being driven down, i just don't really understand why things need to cost soo much, is it the Demand Supply or what?

The prices will come down to a level where BD can challenge DVD. BD players will also become cheaper and cheaper. And then it's all over for DVD.

yes, true... BUT... this is also a technology race. And if someone else comes along with a better distribution format before then (which is a strong possibility), then BD is very dead. Can you honestly see Sony lowering their prices that much?

The price for a BRay disc is just insane. Yes the quality is great, but Sony is greedy! They can kill dvd if the go cheap with BRay, but they rather suck you dry ...

Besides the actual movies being so expensive, the players are definitely not priced to sell. Even some of the less expensive models that I've seen are more expensive than most TV sets (CRT models). How is this making sense in the real world, other than retailers and Sony relying on the good old "competing with the Jones' syndrome" to flog their goods. Why on earth would you pay R 3000.00 for a blu-ray player if you only need to pay around R 300.00 to R 400.00 for a perfectly good DVD player?

Im pretty sure that when DVD's first came out they were in the R300 range?, and you definitely couldn't buy a DVD player for R300 like u can now.

It's 95 Yen for 1 Dollar. Mr Stringer better cut production costs then or his
junk won't sell outside of urban Japan.

Yep - that old exchange rate is going to hit hard on sales of electronic goods and related material.

Mind you, it could be a great opportunity for someone to set up a Blu-Ray manufacturing facility here.

Combine that with the greed of our local retailers who put a massive 50-100% mark-up on the goods and you have a no-win situation.

Greed, not common sense rules the day.

Piracy FTW!!!! :D Piracy is the competition that will drive them to their knees.

I love the bluray looks and sounds. But the pricing of the discs are preventing me from expanding my collection. When the first came out here in SA I got a bunch of them at R199. a piece. The difference in cost over the DVD was justified.

At R260 -R300 the cost is simply to high. This is the pricing of all the newer releases. It plain greed. Its also stopping me from picking up all my favourites in BD, so they are losing sales. Understand this, if the pricing is better I will buy, but at the moment I feel ripped off and therefore there are zero sales. How does that make business sense? I fully agree with Duncan on this one, BD is great but right now in SA they are killing themselves with the pricing.

Wait till they start pirating BD's... Then this so called "Entertainment Industry" have only themselves to blame. @ R299 a pop... You must be joking if you think I am going to pay so much for a BD.

I did invest in a Full HD TV & a Multichoice HD Decoder which is awesome.
I intend on getting a BD player or PS3 instead... but I am a whole lot more reluctant now seeing as the prices for BD's are madness!!!

What is it with companies and nailing the early adopters??? Can't they see were in a financial crisis!!! :P

The choice also sucks. I'd like to buy a few foreign BDs but we're in Region B while the best stuff is in A, (US and Japan). Thank also SONY for enforcing
Region zoning. Mr Springer - you suck!

um, GREED. It really is that simple. should not surprise anyone really. Bad business sense. Lower the price, increase sales. That's what I was taught in Economics 101. But I guess most of these guys never took that course.

This is so true.
Most of the time it's cheaper to import and pay shipping charges than it is to buy from a local dealer. They're just so into ripping us off that they can't fathom making only 10% profit on any product
