hahahaha, true story
I used to be a die hard car guy. Wouldnt consider an auto, rear wheel drive only, hated turbos

I can make it more depressing. Most of the competition range of the M cars are too stiff and actually hurt my back on general day to day driving.

I still like a rapid car, but I need to consider overall ride comfort, space for kids, resale value, insurance and of course, fuel economy. I just turned 40......

Heh, I've been saying it for the last decade, and it still holds true: Better buy your fast fuel guzzlers now while fuel is still relatively affordable. Soon it will become real expensive.

Pfft, this is nothing.
Wait till you get excited about being able to fit the luggage, bicycles, kayak and all holiday related stuff in the boot/ back seat; never mind your wife has a cooler box on her lap and a bag at her feet and your kids are sitting on pillows/ blankets.

Was 23 when it was important to me. Was driving 2000km a month and needed something workable without breaking the bank.
 
Massive respect for the 320D. But it doesn't do much for me. Since working for myself and no commuting, logic doesn't always win.
 
Seriously thinking about upgrading my 10 year old car to this. Only things that make me doubt a bit:
1) Quality of ride compared to say a C-Class or Audi A4 diesels
2) boot space for a family of 3 but will be 4 by around June :p

Honestly there is no competition.

C-class is probably the worst Mercedes out there. Terrible gearbox, plastic everywhere, Everything just creaks and rattles. Ride quality not any better and you miss out on the dynamics. Just terrible ergonomics overall.

Audi A4 will be okay but man is it boring. Rather save money and get a jetta diesel over the A4.

In short get the 320D. there is no comparison.

What about engine longevity of the beemer compared to its rivals? I've heard they're not reliable after 150 000 km's. Do you own one?

Whoever told you that doesn’t know anything. That Diesel engine is the best out there. It’s so reliable you would think Toyota built it. It will last the longest out of the bunch.

No I don’t own one. I have contemplated selling my my kidneys for one but I am not ready to go under the knife yet.
 
Thanks for the info. Tbh I was initially looking for an suv type vehicle first for the extra boot space but now I'm not sure on driving something with just a raised suspension but at a much higher cost. I think a sedan should be fine as long as the boot is big enough

Having owned an SUV (2019 Sportage) and to compare a mates 2017 Creta, not much boot space. Sedan has way more boot space, probably just easier loading and unpacking an SUV because of the tailgate.

There are no reliability issues on the 320d that i know of.
Engine is solid, gearbox solid, interior lasts forever.

Ride quality on mine is a little firm. I guess this is the problem BMW have, too soft and everyone complains, too firm and everyone complains. I think where it is, its a good balance but certainly doesnt feel soft and the first thoughts when driving wont be, this is really comfortable.
