Spy Shots: Facelifted BMW M2

Our German spy photographers have captured images of what appears to be a facelifted BMW M2 prototype undergoing testing. The changes appear to be quite substantial… could this be a development unit for the rumoured hotter version of many critics' favourite BMW M car?

The current BMW M2 has received much attention since its local arrival in 2016 and it recently scooped a deserving win in the Performance Car category of the recent Cars.co.za Consumer Awards – powered by WesBank. This achievement is a testament to the ability and performance credentials of the M2 and for the next iteration, BMW will be looking to improve upon what is clearly a winning formula.

The spy shots you see here depict what appears to be a pre-production version of a facelifted BMW M2 as it undergoes testing, replete with camouflage covering the bumper and grille, front and rear taillights and rear diffuser. A number of design changes can be expected for the facelifted BMW M2 with the front grille, headlights, bumper and air intakes likely to change substantially. At the rear, the taillight graphic and rear diffuser will also be redesigned. Furthermore, the M2 seen here also features a larger exhaust system and bigger brakes.

The design of the facelifted BMW M2 is expected to change substantially compared with the current iteration.

The current BMW M2 is powered by a 3.0-litre straight-6 turbocharged engine that develops 272 kW and 500 Nm of torque. If this car is only a precursor to an M2 that simply carries over the 2 Series updates, it is not that likely that engine will be tuned to provide more power/torque, but it is still a possibility. Last year, reports suggested that BMW is working on a hotter version of the M2, likely to be called the M2 GTS or M2 CS, which will offer in the region of 300 kW from an uprated version of the engine under the hood of the current M2.

We will keep you updated as more information on the facelifted or hotter BMW M2 becomes available, so stay tuned.

Facelifted BMW M2 begins testing

The BMW M2 has only been on sale in the UK for just over a year now, but facelifted test cars of the 365bhp turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder performance coupé have already hit public roads in Germany, as well as the Nürburgring.

The images provide clear hints to a lightly facelifted model tentatively planned for introduction during the second half of 2017.

Despite being lightly disguised, the test cars seen by Autocar spy photographers clearly reveal the new head and tail-light designs for the updated M2. These changes will also be applied to other, less powerful variants of the 2 Series Coupé and Cabriolet, including the recently introduced 248bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder 230i model and the 335bhp turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder M240i.

Although retaining the same shape as today’s units, the headlights on the facelifted M2 receive new LED graphics with altered octagonal corona rings and main beam projectors. The tail-lights also adopt new lenses featuring a similar horizontal-themed LED-enhanced graphic as the current model.

Also evident is a new front bumper. While heavily disguised, it looks set to adopt a slightly wider kidney grille as well as altered air duct styling for a more efficient engine bay and front brake cooling.

Further back, there are restyled sills underneath the doors.

There’s also a modified rear bumper. It receives a redesigned diffuser featuring a new middle section. The test car pictured here also appears to run a larger exhaust than the existing M2, suggesting BMW’s M division is set to provide the facelifted model with an altered system with more free-flowing properties for improved performance.

Despite recent rumours suggesting the facelifted M2 may adopt a new B58-specification engine, Autocar understands it will retain the older N55-based unit until the planned introduction of a second-generation model in 2019. In its current guise, the rear-wheel-drive M2 performance coupé delivers 365bhp and 433lb ft of torque, giving it 0-62mph acceleration in 4.3sec (in combination with an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox).

Further speculation surrounding the facelifted M2 has revolved around the possibility of it featuring optional four-wheel drive, as with the M240i xDrive. However, this is denied by M division sources.

One clear change to the mechanical package seen on the M2 test cars is an upgraded brake package featuring new discs and calipers.

Rob Green-fettled BMW M2 has 300kW/580Nm!

RGMotorsport has been 'M-powering' BMW owners since 1992 and has had a string of noteworthy tuning successes with the brand. Which isn’t surprising; RGM’s founder, Rob Green, qualified as a BMW technician back in 1987 and worked at various blue roundel dealerships before deciding to go it alone five years later.

The first tweaked BMW left the RGM premises soon after and Green unashamedly admits to having a soft spot for the brand. BMW fans will remember the likes of egg-yellow Tsunami, The Thing (a bright orange E92 M3 which is still talked of with reverence), and the Blue Blur - a very quick racing Land Rover Defender with a BMW straight six under the stubby bonnet.

In celebration of these and others that have gone before, RGMotorsport has added an M2 upgrade to their performance palette. It’s not their most radical car by a long shot, but gentle massaging by the RGM technical team gives it a harder edge.

In stock form the M2 makes a useful 272kW and 465Nm and BMW claim a 4.5 second 0 to 100 km/h sprint – dropping to 4.3 seconds with the optional double-clutch 7-speed ‘box. Those numbers would’ve likely been achieved with the overboost function, which unleashes a burst of 500Nm.

An RGM customer wanted his BMW M2 to really stand out from the performance crowd – a tendency often found in petrolheads worldwide. RGM said: "Some go the upgrade route when new, some fiddle and twiddle along the way, and some do it later in the car’s life. But one thing is certain: they’ll do something to make their car unique."

In this instance, the customer opted for a Techniflow de-cat exhaust downpipe and plug-in power software (PPS), a combination which has seen the M2 morph into a 300kW/580Nm beastie. It is yet to be put up against the clock but it probably get pretty close to breaking into the four-second bracket – which means there’s very little other than true exotica which will beat it away from the lights.

So what is the resale value on a modded M2? 50 cents?

Slight MY update for 2018:

The BMW M2 will form part of the new 2-Series line-up launched in July 2017. This compact-sized, powerful sports coupe from BMW M GmbH (fuel consumption combined: 8.5 l/100 km [33.2 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 199 g/km) benefits from the same innovations as the standard 2-Series Coupe. Boasting a high-performance six-cylinder in-line engine, rearwheel- drive agility, a lightweight M Sport suspension made from aluminium and extrovert styling, the new BMW M2 Coupe has everything it needs to deliver the last word in driving pleasure.

The new BMW M2 Coupe instantly stands out as a member of the BMW M family thanks to styling that leaves little doubt as to its breathtakingly dynamic performance credentials. Inspired by various models from BMW Motorsport history, the new BMW M2 Coupe wears its exceptional sporting prowess "on its sleeve", helped by the visual impact of features such as a low-slung front apron with large air intakes, muscular flanks with trademark M side gills, 19- inch aluminium wheels in familiar M twin-spoke design and the wide, low-tothe- road rear end with M-specific twin-tailpipe exhaust. Sports seats, an M sports steering wheel and an M gearshift lever ensure the driver is in complete control of their BMW M2 at all times.

The three-litre straight-six under the bonnet of the new BMW M2 deploys cutting-edge M TwinPower Turbo technology to generate 272 kW/370 hp at 6,500 rpm, laying down a marker in the high-performance compact sports car segment. The same applies to power delivery: peak torque of 465 Nm (343 lb-ft) can be briefly increased to a mighty 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) in overboost mode. This propels the new BMW M2 Coupe with optional sevenspeed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) and Launch Control from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.3 seconds, with top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). At the same time though, the car demonstrates its outstanding efficiency too, with fuel consumption of just 7.9 litres per 100 km (35.8 mpg imp) with the M DCT transmission, equating to CO2 emissions of 185 g/km.

The lightweight aluminium front and rear axles from the BMW M3/M4, forged 19-inch aluminium wheels with mixed-size tyres, M Servotronic steering with two settings and immensely powerful M compound brakes equip the new BMW M2 Coupe to move the game on once again in the compact highperformance sports car segment when it comes to driving dynamics. The electronically controlled Active M Differential, which further enhances both traction and handling stability, also deserves great credit here.
