SA TUNER REVEALS PLUG-AND-PLAY UPDATE FOR BMW M2

There aren’t many in South Africa, but that hasn’t stopped a local tuner from releasing a plug-and-play package for the BMW M2.

Indeed, with just 63 units set aside for the local market in 2016 (all of which were sold before the launch in April), demand is far exceeding supply, as demonstrated by the ridiculous asking prices for the few that have made it onto the second-hand market thus far.

Still, RGMotorsport, a Randburg-based tuner, has released a video of an M2 on a dyno after the fitment of a plug-in software module.

Although the footage doesn’t reveal much at all, the firm says the 3,0-litre straight-six turbo motor’s peak power has increased from 272 kW to 286 kW, while maximum torque has jumped from 465 N.m (plus 35 N.m on overboost) to a whopping 570 N.m.

The vehicle in question is also using an octane booster. No word on any acceleration improvements over the standard 4,3-second dash to 100 km/h (in auto guise) or indeed the price of the plug-in module.

How much power do guys really need
 
The BMW M2 might have only arrived in SA this year (read our road test here), but BMW’s engineers have already reportedly started development on a faster, even sharper derivative.

As BMW has already launched the M4 GTS abroad, German magazine Auto Motor und Sport has reported that a lighter version of the M2 is currently being considered.

It is no secret that BMW is able to extract more power from the 3,0-litre turbocharged in-line six-cylinder engine than the current 272 kW/500 N.m. In fact, reports suggest that the new model will deliver close to 300 kW, while torque will climb to an M4-rivalling 550 N.m.

There is also plenty of scope in terms of making the car lighter. Apart from the obvious deletion of the rear seats and the cutting of some sound-deadening material, carbon-fibre parts could also be used.

In addition, the car could gain a half-cage, adjustable suspension and larger brakes. So, what will it be called? We’d put money on M2 CSL or M2 GTS, although perhaps something more unique is on the cards… Time will tell.
