The Bodybuilders Thread: Circuit II

Need some words of encouragement lol. Since Feb I have been in the gym about 6 times, due to traveling and being really sick (still sick) so now I am thinking that when I go back I will basically have to start right at the beginning again, is this true? Please tell me that it takes a few months to loose your gains (centimeters) and strength?

How long have you been off gym before and then gone back? What was your experience?

Muscle memory is a hell of a thing, 2 weeks and you will be back in form :)

Just power through the first week as it will be very demotivating not hitting the same lifts as you did when you stopped, but you will get there asap!

Unfortunately we start losing conditioning in a matter of days. Fitness is lost so quickly, it is noticeable from 10 days already. I am not sure how a break impacts lifting (I would imagine a lesser impact on strength), but you will gain that fitness back in less time than it initially took you. Take it easy and eat well to ensure you don't get sick again and repeat the cycle.

Since I stopped using supplements and going 'natural' aka eating right and drinking water. I have found that I am actually feeling a lot stronger and have seen at least a 10 percent increase in my workload.

My goals for this year are:
Bench 120kg x 10
Squat 180kg x 10
Run 42.2km (Soweto Marathon so around November)

That's an odd goal and I'm interested to see how that goes. Does your current program also include running > 20km?
To clarify, I find it odd that you want to be strong but could be sabotaging your gains by running marathons.

I know it is a strange challenge but I am trying to get stronger while being able to run distance. I run every Saturday with a group of guys and girls and we average 15km sometimes go to 20km so I got that under the belt. At gym benching 90kgs without assistance and 110kg x 2 reps with assistance. So I think I can get there.

Good luck and keep us updated :)

To run a marathon, you will need to run at least four times a week. You are doing some good long runs already, so I would maybe look for a program and start with proper marathon training about 20 weeks out.

A good program is something like: hills (for strength), track (for speed), fartlek, LSD (long slow distance). It could interfere with your squats and leg training, but I don't see why you couldn't do both. You can do some plyometric work incorporated into your strength days to help your running too.

And, keep us updated.

Have not used any sort of meal supplements in ages but I would like to get something again as I'd like to gain a couple of kgs. Will be increasing my gym activities so need to get in enough nutrition.

What are good these days and don't have too much added sugar in it? It does not have to be a pure protein can have some carbs in as well.

I've been happy with Supplements SA Whey Protein Concentrate. It's unflavoured but I don't need to add any additional flavouring.

I eat enough of that trust me, never seems to be enough though. Got a fast metabolism.

Post what you eat on a daily basis, and your current stats. Most guys that say they eat a lot still aren't eating enough. A lot and enough are not the same thing ;)

Then you eat more, and more of the correct food.
Did we just become best friends?
