I'd rather strap up at that point than change my grip...

Had a nasty shoulder injury years ago in Uni when deadlifting heavy with alternate grip and my shoulder was not alligned properly. I was also a lot dumber back then and ignorant of proper form...but I prefer overhand and straps to alternate. Feels better for me.

Hi Gents

Quick question regarding DL's.

Is elevated heart rate on completion of a set normal? I am 33 and female and incorperated DL's into my plan for the first time this week and have ended up with a HR of 160+ as the end of 5 reps. Just want to know if this is right or if im doing something wrong... thanks.

That is very formal. My HR spikes up much higher when doing 180kg+ lifts for as little as 3 reps.

DL's are a full body muscle killer. Using all the muscles and expending a load of energy to do it. Even being a little breathless is normal.

Yah, been wondering how hard should i actually push myself w.r.t. elevated HR after DL. Just be careful this doesn't happen to you...

I want to throw up somethings, on days where I do 11 sets, near the end I lie on the floor between sets :(

Yeah, blood pressure. Squats and DLs do that for me. I'm finding functional training has helped a bit - I guess it increases fitness levels and is easier to manage HR. Regardless... 11 sets of anything to the max is hectic.

I miss the 'powerboxing 360' classes (don't laugh) I used to do at Redemption Martial Arts. It's primarily a kickboxing place :) Got me really fit and i lost 5kg of fat in 3 months, so almost 10% of my bodyweight.

Does doing 200 pushups in about 25min compensate for me missing gym todaY? Did them in sets of 20, then 15. Initially wide grip and towards the end close grip. I know I'll be sore tomorrow...

Nice (200 push ups). That kind of functional training is good stuff!

ryan411 are you incorporating weight training in between the SL5x5 recommended training days?

nope not really ... If I miss a SL 5x5 workout then I try to do some kind of strength training every 2 days at least, so push-ups and ab work here and there. I'm also deviating from SL 5x5 of late in that my knees have been wonky and it takes more than 5 sets of bench press to make my chest sore the next day. And because skipping squats of late I have been doing more dead lifts.

Uhhh, did Deadlifts two days ago and heavy squats yesterday.

My back is killing me, I think I might have a bulged disk.

It's a constant pain, and is aggravated by any bending movement. Hurts like hell.

I really hope it's not a long term issue since Deadlifts and Squats are such a great exercise, I can give up squats but deadlifts... :(

Strangely, I've found Remedy Blue works for the pain...and Cataflam, and Myprodol... but the latter two the pharmacy won't give me any more off.

If you've screwed up your back, all you can do is bench. (I actually stumbled on an article recommended bench as one of the excercises for a damaged lower back).

If you do squats or deadlifts, you know the results. If you do OHP, it puts pressure on your back...

I just got back from bench, terrible performance, but I wasn't exactly motivated on a public holiday.

AFAIK yes, jelly = jam.
E.g. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich :)

Edit: is this a one size fits all diet? Cause if I eat 3000 cal per day in week one i will just be getting fat!

Happened to me about 2 months ago, pain is still there. The doc said it was back strain and that I must just relax (and not gym for a while) and take anti-inflammatories. I didnt listen to her and continued gyming and now the bloody pain is there whenever I bend! I did some research into the cause and it seems that tight hamstrings often cause back strain.

I was actually working it out for interest sakes, I was expecting it to be a lot lower in calories - so I'm suprised it came out so high using generic foods on myfitnesspal.com

If you look at the program that goes with it, it'll probably explain the calories. Its HIIT weight LOSS prgram.

Get yourself some Remedy Blue - seems to work for me.

Hmm back pain can be dangerous, but it really depends on what the actual cause is. Something as simple as your bed can be the problem, especially if you really worked your back hard with DL/Squats. When I replaced my bed, all my back problems went away.

I managed to stretch the ligaments in my big tone on the right foot this week. It all nice and blue now. At least it feels like I can walk and run just fine, as long as I am not trying to point or curl the toes. Went to dance class last night as well and it was perfectly fine.

Either way, I made the choice to take a week off from gym, since I was at the gym non-stop the last 3 months, and one of my rules are to take a week off after 3 months. So hopefully it will heal faster since I will chill the next week mostly.
