Yeah so did shoulders morning...didn;t go that well. Heh where in the past I could easily do 50kg for 5 reps OHP....today I couldn't do a single rep at 45kg LOL.

Ohwell. Next week then it is.

So went heavy last night on chest, low reps between 4 - 6.
Incline barbell
Incline Dumbell
Pec Deck
Push Press

I don't feel as sore as I usually feel with volume work, nice thing about it was my workout was short.

Shoulder's and upper back today.

My friend that I got into gymming, shame I went too hard on him.

I basically made him do my routine which I believe is probably too much volume for a beginner.

He couldn't straighten his arms this morning :P

It looks like my deadlifts are picking up again. This is what I did yesterday

20 x 60kg
15 x 100kg
10 x 140kg
10 x 180kg
5 x 220kg
2 x 260kg
1 x 280kg
and again 5 x 220kg

It seems to me that if I neglect to eat clean, I do better

That is pretty hectic Slootvreter :p Pretty motivational, well gonna motivate me to eat a crap load on gym days now :p

Guys, last night I followed a link (showing up in my FB feed on my iPad) made to look like a MensHealth article. Very cleverly done, I got halfway through reading before i got suspicious :p It was just too good to be true, claims of a few kg muscle gain and with fat loss in a month.

People still take Mens' Health seriously? Almost every edition is based on the same template.
Sex tips that will drive her crazy. Eat burgers and lose weight. Abs in six weeks. It really gets a bit tiring.

@Orihalcon, how's the cutting going?

Agreed, though sometimes they have some interesting stuff that isn't hogwash :)

Also get that spam in facebook about celebrities like the Rock etc.

I think Men's Health is more for the casual weekend gym guy.
I prefer the overseas bodybuilding magazines, it's the same stuff over and over again but it's good to drum it into your head.

Looks like I'm not going to be seeing the gym for the rest of this week. Flu symptoms have started

It always seems to happen as soon as I have the momentum going :(

SA is 15 years behind the states.

I know this because my personal training course is teaching me all kinds of phucking broscience

brb don't eat more than 1 gram of protein per kg of bodyweight or the extra nitrogen being processed will harm your kidneys.
brb you can lose fat and gain muscle at the same time

I learned more from one Ian McCarthy YouTube video than I have in half a year of PT training.

Who are you studying through? You know we can do American courses as well right? ACSM, NASM, ACE, etc etc. They all have testing places here as well. Namely at Stellenbosch University and in PTA.

But again, even those are ***.

Northlink, it's a joke really. But I already know most of what I need to, just need the qualification now.

But I'm liking the student life atm, might go into physiotherapy/dietetics after.

So I'm doing dumbbell curls - movement is something like neutral grip at my hip moving upwards to end with an underhand grip. At the bottom of the movement when my forearm goes more than 90 degrees to my upper arm I feel a short pinch, like a shooting pain up my arm.

This is only my left arm that does this. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Probably means the ligaments in the arm is not strong enough yet for the weight you doing. If keep going you might tear it, takes 6 weeks to heal, in which time you can't do any exercise that involves that arm, unless you do physio to help it heal faster, in which case you go for 4 weeks healing time.

You need to get the ligaments to get stronger, and sadly hypertrophy is not the way to do it. Focus a bit more on compound movements that will force you to bulk up better, which strengthens muscles, ligaments and even the bone structure. This is more in the range of 3-5 reps. For curling, a pull exercise is best, like barbell rows, or pendlay rows and pull-ups. For me, this still get my arms/biceps plenty tired, so by the time I get to curling, I don't have to go too heavy.

Tinuva, thank you for confirming my suspicions. As this is only in my left arm I also thought it was a strength issue. I've been avoiding curls with dumbbells generally now and instead am doing them with an EZthingamajig or a regular barbell. Interesting though that the underhand grip to the neutral grip could produce the shooting pain.

In other updates, I've now been going to the gym regularly for 6 weeks after never stepping a foot in one in the 25 years before this. Three days a week I do 5x5 and am up to 60Kg's squats which I'm pretty stoked about. I'll not mention the OHP - my arms remain quite uncooperative. I've put on roughly 4Kgs (am 73.5 now) but suspect I could be gaining more if I lay off the cardio which I find I always gravitate towards for anything from 5 to 15 minutes a session. I can see noticeable changes in my physique, especially in my thighs and back. My abs are starting to make an appearance again too, which is fantastic.

I've now started to add some additional exercises to the 5x5 mostly because I have more time in the evenings. I'm making a concerted effort to build up strength in my arms and chest as they have neen neglected since, well, ever. Getting to the gym is becoming obsessive for me and I'm wondering if I shouldn't be spending more time in recovery as opposed to going pretty much every day of the week. I'm feeling more positive than ever in my work and am far more productive and conscious about what I eat and how much I drink on weekends.

Its thanks to this thread that I was inspired to get off my ass, so to all of you here, thank you.
